Buccaneers tested in first of three straight road matches

TAMPA, Fla. -- The #16 Barry University Buccaneers women's volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-1, 25-19, 25-21) at #6 University Tampa on Friday evening in Sunshine State Conference (SSC) action at the Bob Martinez Athletic Center. The Bucs drop to 24-4 overall, and 15-3 in SSC play. The Spartans (25-3 overall) and Buccaneers split their regular-season meetings and now share the top spot in the SSC standings.

INSIDE THE MATCHUPS:

Records: Barry (24-4, 15-3 SSC), Tampa (25-3, 15-3 SSC)
All-Time Series: Tampa leads, 48-20, but Barry has won four of the last nine meetings including a 2019 NCAA South Region Semifinal in Boca Raton.

SUMMARY:

  • 1st set | In a reversal of roles from last Friday, the visiting Buccaneers took an early 4-0 lead and then led 11-5 before the Spartans mounted their comeback. Trailing 13-12, Tampa took its first lead after winning four straight points and finished the set winning 13 of 17 points. | Barry 17, Tampa 25
  • 2nd set | The Spartans built a quick seven-point cushion and actually commanded a 19-11 score before a kill from Marina Azevedo started a four-point run for the Buccaneers. A solo block from reigning AVCA and SSC Player of the Week Diana Akopova pulled the visitors within four at 19-15. | Barry 19, Tampa 25
  • 3rd set | Mónica López delivered a service ace, the only one of the match for the Buccaneers, to get Barry within three (17-14), but the Spartans earned two more services (totalling eight in the sweep) including match point from Tess Schrenger. | Barry 22, Tampa 25

ON THE HORIZON:
The Bucs complete their regular-season slate with road matches on Saturday (Florida Southern @ 4 p.m.) and Sunday (Eckerd @ 1 p.m.).
