Men's Comes Back Strong After Layoff

Bucs take down Tampa 3-1

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The 21st-ranked Barry Buccaneers came back strong after the long layoff due to Hurricane Ian and defeated the Tampa Spartans 3-1 in Sunshine State Conference men's soccer action at Buccaneer Field on Saturday night.

SUMMARY:

  • 4:55 - Barry jumped out on top very early in the game as Pascal Sattelberger bounced a free kick off the head of one of the wall defenders and past Tampa keeper Adam Forster. | Barry 1, Tampa 0
  • 27:09 - David Polanco won a penalty kick in the 28th minute after he was dragged down by Marcello Valbuena in the box and proceeded to convert it. | Barry 2, Tampa 0
  • 48:11 - The Spartans came out gunning in the second half, playing high pressure all over the field and it paid off in the 49th minute. Omar Thali and Juancho Fernandez worked a give-and-go at the top of the box and Thali converted to trim the lead in half. | Barry 2, Tampa 1
  • 88:23 - Very late in the game, the Bucs took advantage of a tired Spartan defense to score the clincher. Daniel Schaal had the ball on the right wing and found Yamil Gauna on the left. Guana spotted Juan Valiente unmarked near the penalty spot and Valiente knocked the ball in past Forster to the near post. | Barry 3, Tampa 1

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Nils Buescheler had five saves to notch his third win of the season.
  • Forster had five saves as well and was aided by Valbuena who swept a ball off the line on a shot by Valiente.
  • The Bucs out-shot the Spartans 15-11, including 9-6 on goal, and led 4-3 in corners. 
  • The game was the first for the Bucs since beating Saint Leo on Sept. 24. A game with Rollins was postponed until Oct. 25 and one with Flagler canceled.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs travel across town to Davie, Fla., to face the Nova Southeastern Sharks on Wednesday, Oct. 12 in a matchup of the top two teams in the conference.
