MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers lost 8-7 to the Nova Southeastern Sharks in the opening game of a Sunshine State Conference baseball series at Feinbloom Field on Thursday night.

Ihosvany Casteneda reached on an error by NSU third baseman Daniel Irisarri and David Vazquez drew a walk to load the bases. NOTEWORTHY:
- Frank II Gonzalez pitched well with nothing to show for it. In 7.1 innings, he allowed three three runs on nine hits and two walks and struck out five.
- Jake Fishman (0-2) took the loss for the Bucs, giving up a run on two hits in an inning of relief.
- Jeremy Cook (1-1) got the win for the Sharks, after allowing two runs on two hits and a walk in 2.0 innings.
- Matt Kavanaugh walked one in an otherwise perfect ninth for his first save.
- Escala led the Bucs at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a walk, a homer, two runs and three RBI
- Fernandez was 4-for-5 with two doubles, a homer and three runs scored for the Sharks.
