Baseball Sweeps Panthers To Take Series

Bucs win 10-3 and 8-2

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers swept a Sunshine State Conference baseball doubleheader from the Florida Tech Panthers 10-3 and 8-2 on Saturday at Feinbloom Field.

SUMMARY:
GAME ONE:

  • T1 - Rodnie Bernard homered with two outs for the Panthers. | Florida Tech 1, Barry 0
  • T4 - After Jakob Newton walked and stole second, Bernard knocked him home with a single up the middle. Paul Castillo follwed with an RBI double. | Florida Tech 3, Barry 0
  • B4 - The Bucs sent nine men to the plate, scoring five times in the fourth. JC Garcia was hit by pitch with one out. Bran Socorro followed with a single down the right-field line. Derek Smolenski got the Bucs on the board with a double down the left-field line, allowing both runners to score, and moving to third on the throw. Omar Baldo followed with a ground ball that the Panthers took home to try an get Smolenski, but were unsuccessful. Andrew Rapoza followed with a two-run homer to left-center. | Barry 5, FT 3
  • B5 - The Bucs tacked on four more in the fifth. Richie Sobalvarro was hit by a pitch to lead things off and David Vazquez belted his first homer for the red & black. After Garcia was hit by pitch again, Socorro laced a single to left. Baldo plated Garcia with a single through the right side and Socorro scored with the ball got away from rightfielder Brett Parrish. | Barry 9, FT 3
  • B8 - Ihosvany Casteneda drew a one-ouot walk, stole second and third and scored on a ground out by Sobalvarro.

GAME TWO:

  • T1 - The Panthers again jumped out ot the early lead when Bernard scored on a series of fielding miscue by the Bucs. | FT 1, Barry 0
  • B2 - Barry again posted a big inning to take control of the game, sending 10 men to the plate in the second. With two outs, Garcia singled to left. Socorro, Smolenski and Blake Brito all walked to force in the tying run. Rapoza followed with a two-run single and, after a walk to Willie Escala reloaded the bases, Casteneda drew another free pass to make it 4-1. | Barry 4, FT 1
  • B4 - Brito led off with a homer to left. | Barry 5, FT 1
  • T6 - Newton singled to lead off the inning and scored on a single by Castillo. | Barry 5, FT 2
  • B6 - Smolenski and Brito both walked to start the sixth. Rapoza drove in Smolenski with a single to left. After Casteneda reached on an error to load the bases with one out, Sobalvarro bounced a ball to the shortstop who was able to get Casteneda at second. But Sobalvarro beat the double play and both Brito and Rapoza scored. | Barry 8, FT 2

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Frank II Gonzalez (3-0) worked seven solid innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk. He struck out seven to earn his third win.
  • Mitch Harding (1-2) took the loss for the Panthers. In 3.2 innings, he allowed five runs on five hits and a walk.
  • Arrison Perez (1-0) tossed a complete game, holding the Panthers to two runs (one earned) on six hits. He did walk a batter and struck out on. He threw 70 pitches, 54 for strikes.
  • The Bucs scored 18 runs in the twinbill, despite collecting only 13 hits. But they walked 13 times and were hit by pitch another four.
  • Rapoza led the hit parade with three hits, including a homer, and five RBI. 
  • Socorro and Garcia each had two hits and scored three times.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs are sceduled to face Nova Southeastern on Wednesday, Mar. 31 at home.
