Men's Basketball Rebounds With Big Win Over Cougars

Eight Bucs score in double figures as Barry sets a season-high

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers rebounded with a big win over the Caldwell Cougars 113-74 in men's basketball action on Sunday on Cesar Odio Court. Eight Bucs scored in double figures as Barry led wire-to-wire.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

"We were very disappointed yesterday," head coach Butch Estes said. "We didn't coach a good game, we didn't play a good game and now I'm just so proud of our staff and our players for securing this bounce-back win over a good team in Caldwell. Tonight we were unselfish, we shared the ball, and you saw the result with eight guys in double figures. It's good to get back on the winning side."

SUMMARY:

  • 1H - Barry busted out to a n 18-8 lead in the first five minutes of the game. In a harbinger of things to come, five different players tallied for the Bucs, led by seven points from Landon Kirkwood. The Cougars hit a couple of three-pointers and trimmed the lead to 20-14, but Barry responded with a 9-0 run, led by five points from Toru Dean. The Cougars never got it under double figures.   • 2H - After the Cougars hit the first basket of the second half, Barry ripped of a 16-4 run to extend the lead to 27 points on a Kirkwood dunk with 15:56 to play. With the reserves on the floor, the Bucs closed the game on a 18-4 run give them the 39-point win.  | Barry 113, Caldwell 74

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Bucs had eight players in double figures, led by 18 points from Amari Haynes.  The eight players in double figures match the season-high. Barry also placed eight in double digits against Florida Memorial on Nov. 27. 
  • Kakar added 14 points, while Nick Anderson, Milon Sheffield and Toru Dean each had 12. Kirkwood and Marcelo Perez chipped in 11 and Michael Schaefer had 10.
  • Barry led 37-35 on the boards. They out-scored Caldwell 60-24 off the bench, 52-24 in the paint and 33-15 in transition.
  • Justinas Marcinkevicius had five of the Bucs nine blocked shots, as they held the Cougars to just 32.4 percent shooting. 
  • Barry's 44 field goals and 58.7 precent shooting were both season highs, as was the 113 points.
  • Anthony Cooper led Caldwell with 19 points, while Daniel Bueno had 12, Tyler Washington 11 and Nichus Jackson 10.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs' game against St. Thomas scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 14 has been canceled due to CoVID protocols. The Bucs will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 18 hosting the Panthers of Virginia Union University.
