EVERETT, Wash. -- Nine Barry University Buccaneers earned 2020 College Rowing Coaches Association/Pocock Scholar-Athlete Awards, while three of them also received recognition for their rowing.
Seniors Jessica hernandez-Blanco and Jessika Scholz, juniors Sarolta Adonyi, Michelle Etchebaster-Martins and Tara Marinkovic and sophomores Janika Koelblin, Maria Stampolkou, Lana Sumner-Borema and Lourdes Tatem earn the honor this season.
Scholar Athlete Awards requirements have been modified for the 2020 season. Student athletes must be in their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of eligibility, must be ranked performance-wise in the top 50 percent of their team, or in the "NCAA Squad" (whichever is smaller) at the conclusion of the 2020 season*, and must have a 3.50 cumulative GPA or higher for their career, and through the fall semester or quarter for the current competition year.
The nine selections brings rowing's total to 59 CRCA Scholar-Athletes since 1997 and breaks the mark of six, set in 2016, for the most in one year.
While the absence of competitive results or a national championship due to the COVID-19 pandemic preclude awarding 1st and 2nd Team All America Awards for the 2020 season, the coaches of the CRCA still wanted to find a way to recognize the top performers in NCAA women's rowing. For 2020, Division II coaches were allowed to nominate up to four student athletes and one coxswain. While these people will not technically be named All-Americans, the CRCA and Pocock congratulate them on earning the nomination from their program.
Barry's Sumner-Borema, Koelblin and Stampolkou were also recognized for their athletic prowess.
Barry's rowing team has won two NCAA Division II national championships, finished runner-up twice and earned seven Sunshine State Conference championships and 13 trips to the National Regatta.
*Formerly they had to race in an NCAA boat for 75 percent of the season or at the conference championships
