Baseball Shocks Second-Ranked Bobcats In 10 Innings

Bucs take down NAIA St. Thomas 8-6

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers are off to the best start in school history after beating the NAIA second-ranked St. Thomas Bobcats 8-6 in 10 innings in baseball action at Maineri Field on Tuesday night.

SUMMARY:

  • T1 - The top of the order continued to set the tone for the Bucs as Andrew Rapoza, Willie Escala and Chris Cabrera open the game with back-to-back-to-back singles to score the first run. Escala later scored on a ground out. | Barry 2, St. Thomas 0
  • B1 - The Bobcats came back in the bottom of the first as five of the first six batters reached base off Buccaneer starter Willie Sanchez. Sanchez later wild pitched a pair of runs in before being releived by Pablo Arevalo, who induced a double play to end the inning. | St. Thomas 3, Barry 2
  • T2 - Ben Terwilliger walked to lead off the inning. He was to second on a single by JC Garcia and third on a wild pitch by Bobcat starter Joel Rivera. Terwilliger later scored on a ground out. | Barry 3, St. Thomas 3
  • T6 - After Omar Baldo singled and Garcia reached on an error, Rapozed ripped a two run double to give barry the lead. | Barry 5, St. Thomas 3
  • B6 - The Bobcats re-tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Andrew Fernandez led off with a double down the left field line. Two outs later, he scored on a single by Alejandro Vazquez. Vazquez tied the game after scoring on a wild pitch. Barry 5, St. Thomas 5
  • T8 - Barry took the lead back in the top of the eighth. Baldo drew a lead off walk and Derek Smolenski came in to run. Smolenski scored from first on a double by Garcia. | Barry 6, St. Thomas 5
  • B8 - St. Thomas tied it again in the bottom of the eighth. Fernandez walked to lead off and went ot second on a wild pitch. Nick Izquierdo tied the game with a single up the middle.
  • T10 - Barry broke through in the top of the tenth for two runs, thanks to another Bibcat error. Bran Socorro reached on an error by Alejandro Rivero and moved to second on a ground out. Elijah Eusebe plated the run with a single to right. He later came around to score an insurance run on three wild pitches. | Barry 8, St. Thomas 6

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Ping-chun Ho (1-0) earned the win with 1.2 perfect innings. He set down all five Bobcats he faced, striking out three.
  • Anthony Boix picked up his first save, although it was not without some drama. The Bobcats loaded the bases on a hit and two walks, but Vazquez lined out into a double play to Eusebe unassisted to end the threat and the game.
  • Arevalo worked 4.2 innings in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
  • Robert Touron (0-1) took the loss for the Bobcats, allowing two unearned runs on a hit and a walk in one inning.
  • Four of the Bucs eight runs were unearned, thanks to the two Bobcat errors.
  • Rapoza was 2-for-4 with a double and two walks, while driving in a pair.
  • Garcia was 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI after missing the last three games.
  • Eusebe was the star of the game, however, singling in his only at-bat to drive in the winning run and coming up the the big defense play in the 10th to secure the win.
  • The win, the seventh straight to open the season for the Bucs, breaks the school record of six straight set in 2013. Both seasons started with a three-game sweep of Georgia Southwestern.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry hosts the Yellowjackets of America International College this weekend, before starting Sunshine State Conference play the following weekend.
