Baseball Pounds Out Doubleheader Sweep Of Hurricanes To Start The Season

Bucs rip off 27 hits in the twinbill

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Barry Buccaneers pounded out a season-opening doubleheader sweep of the Georgia Southwestern State Hurricanes 8-5 and 6-2 at Hurricane Stadium on Saturday.

SUMMARY:
GAME ONE:

  • T1 - The first three batters set the tone for the Buccaneers. Andrew Rapoza led off with a double. Willie Escala followed with a bunt single and Chris Cabrera knocked in both of them with a double to right. | Barry 2, GSW 0
  • T2 - In the second inning, Ariel Diaz reached on an infield single and later scored on a passed ball. | Barry 3, GSW 0
  • T3 - Rapoza banged a lead-off homer and Escala followed with a double down the left field line. Cabrera swapped places with Escala with a double to left and later scored on a ground out by Freddie Matos. | Barry 6, GSW 0
  • T6 - Matos lined a homer to right to lead off the inning. After a single by Diaz and a passed ball, Omar Baldo knocked in another run with a base hit to left center. | Barry 8, GSW 0
  • B8 - The Hurricanes finally got on the board in the eighth when Gunner George scored on a passed ball. Matthew Mamatas doubled to drive in Jacob Harrell and later scored on a ground out. | Barry 8, GSW 3
  • B9 - The 'Canes loaded the bases with no outs. Mamatas singled to drive in one run and George scored on a error. But Austin Genao got Salik Williams swinging to close out the game for the Bucs. | Barry 8, GSW 5

GAME TWO:

  • T1 - The Bucs got the nightcap started much like game one. Rapoza singled to left and Escala followed with a double to left center. Richie Sobalvarro delivered a two-run double for the early lead. | Barry 2, GSW 0
  • B2 - The 'Canes loaded the bases with not outs against Myles Gayman, who walked in one run. But the senior bore down and got out of the frame without further damage with a pair of strikeouts and a force out at the plate. | Barry 2, GSW 1
  • T3 - In the third, Rapoza drew a leadoff walk and Cabrera was hit by a pitch. Sobalvarro, Matos and Diaz had back-to-back-to-back RBI singles. | Barry 5, GSW 1
  • B7 - Williams led off with a bloop single to right. He moved around on a passed ball and a ground out and scored on an error. | Barry 5, GSW 2
  • T9 - Matos doubled with two outs and Diaz knocked him in with a single to left. | Barry 6, GSW 2

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Frank II Gonzalez (1-0) pitched a masterful game in the opener to get the win. He tossed six shutout innings, allowing just two hits and struck out six.
  • Genao earned the save with the strikeout of Williams.
  • Tucker Smith (0-1), the 2019 Peachbelt Conference pitcher of the year for the Hurricanes, got rocked for seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits in five innings.
  • Gayman (1-0) got the win in game two. He gave up a run on three hits and three walks with five strikeouts in five innings.
  • Nick McCollum (0-1) took the loss for the 'Canes. In 3.1 innings, he gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks.
  • Barry ripped off 27 hits in the twinbill. Diaz led the offense, going 6-for-8 with a double. Escala had five hits, including three doubles. Cabrera, Matos and Sobalvarro each drove in three runs, while Rapoza scored four.

The teams play the final game in the series on Sunday starting at noon.
