BRADENTON, Fla. – This weekend will see the premiere conference in Division II tennis hash it out to crown a champion. Both Buccaneer tennis teams enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed in their respective tournament. The women open up tournament play against the eighth-seeded Embry-Riddle Eagles while the men will take on the eight-seeded Florida Tech Panthers.
MEN'S
The Buccaneer men's tennis team slipped in the latest national rankings, dropping from the top spot into the second position. The Bucs went a perfect 8-0 in conference play this season en route to earning the conference regular season championship and the top seed in the postseason tournament.
The Bucs finished the year with all six of their starting singles players ranked within the top-75. Pierre Montrieul leads the Bucs with his No. 4 ranking, followed by Carlos Gomez at No. 27, Alejandro Ibañez Gallego at No. 28, Alejandro Ortega Palacios at No. 42, Daniel Ventura at No. 47, and Vivien Versier at No. 69.
WOMEN'S
Barry's women's tennis team finished the regular season ranked second in the country, going 19-1 in the regular season. The Buccaneers recorded a 9-1 record within the conference and were named the No. 1 seed in the postseason tournament.
The women placed four players within the top-75 of the latest ITA rankings with No. 36 Jil Engelmann, No. 43 Julie Razafindranaly, No. 51 Carolin Schmidt, and No. 64 Verena Schmid.
The Bucs' first match will be against Embry-Riddle at 3:30 PM on Friday, Apr. 26, at the tournament hosted by Nova Southeastern University at IMG Academy in Bradenton.
