Baseball Storms Back To Swamp Sharks

Bucs score seven unanswered runs to rally for huge regional win

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers weathered a brief rain shower and a first-inning grand slam to rally for an 8-7 win over Nova Southeastern on Tuesday night at Feinbloom Field in a non-conference baseball matchup.

SUMMARY:

  • T1 - The Sharks jumped all over Barry starter Nick Bralczyk in the first inning. After a pair of walks and single by Garrett Wolforth, Ian Acevedo crushed a grand slam to left center to give NSU a 4-0 lead. After a single by Bryan Diaz, Sam Duran knocked him home to increase the lead. | NSU 5, Barry 0
  • B2 - Deyvid Silva led off the inning with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a error by Sharks starter Duncan Pastore on a failed pick off. He scored on a ground out by Andrew Rapoza. | NSU 5, Barry 1
  • T3 - The Sharks got that run back in the third. Acevedo drew a one-out walk and stole second. Diaz came through with the RBI single. | NSU 6, Barry 1
  • T5 - NSU added an unearned run in the fifth. Acevedo hit a high chopper to third that he beat out and he advanced all the way to third on an errant throw. He scored on a ground out by Andrew Labosky. | NSU 7, Barry 1
  • B6 - After Pastore exited, the Bucs hammered on the Sharks' bullpen. They started by sending 10 men to the plate in the sixth and scoring four runs. Justin Lamazares, Chris Cabrera and Silva had hits to open the inning, cutting the lead to 7-2. Rapoza drew a walk to load the bases and Ariel Diaz chopped a ball passed Mike Rojas at first to score two more runs. Rapoza came home on a single through the right side by Richie Sobalvarro. | NSU 7, Barry 5
  • B8 - After the game was delayed for 27 minutes after the end of the seventh inning, the Bucs got back to work in the eighth. Sobalvarro and Arrison Perez singled to lead off the inning. JC Garcia bunted into a fielder's choice to wipe out Sobalvarro, but Lamazares singled to score Perez and send Garcia to third. Lamazares stole second and, with runners at second and third, Cabrera came up with a two-out, two-run single through the left side to put the Bucs on top. | Barry 8, NSU 7
  • T9 -  After giving up a lead-off single to Nathan Chevalier, Hugo Casilla, got a ground out, then struck out Acevedo and Labosky to seal the win. | Barry 8, NSU 7

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The game was delayed 59 minutes at the start, in addition to the 27 minute delay between the seventh and eighth innings.
  • Ping-chun Ho (1-1), the sixth of seven Barry pitchers, worked a scoreless eighth inning to get the win. He got the Sharks to pop up three times. 
  • Casilla earned his seventh save, facing four batters in the ninth. He struck out two. 
  • The Barry bullpen combined to throw 8.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk and struck out eight.
  • Gill Torres (1-1) faced four batters in the eighth, allowing one run of his own and both inherited runners from Jarret Krzyzanowski to score on two hits, taking the loss.
  • The Sharks bullpen did not fare as well, allowing seven runs on nine hits and three walks in three innings. 
  • Six Buccaneers recorded two hits on the night: Lamazares, Cabrera, Silva, Diaz, Sobalvarro and Freddie Matos. Cabrera and Diaz each drove in two, while Lamazares and Silva each scored twice. 
  • Acevedo led the Sharks, going 2-for-3 with a homer, three runs and four RBI.Wolforth and Diaz also had two hits.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs, who have played 16 of the last 17 games at home, travel to St. Petersburg, Fla., this weekend to face the Eckerd Tritons in a Sunshine State Conference series.
