Baseball Overpowers #18 Sharks For First SSC Win

Joel Alvarez went 4-for-4 with a 3-run HR and 2 runs scored

DAVIE, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers exploded for four runs in the second inning and held off the 18th-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks 7-4 in Sunshine State Conference baseball action at the NSU Baseball Complex on Friday night. The win evens the series at 1-1 and sets up a rubber game on Saturday.

  • T2 - With one out, Reuben Pino singled and stole second. Bran Socorro singled to left to drive in Pino. After Derek Smolenski singled, Joel Alvarez followed with a homer to left off Shark starter Jared Krzyzanowski. | Barry 4, NSU 0
  • B3 - Jeffrey Cyr walked to lead off and Brandon Chinea followed with a double. Cyr scored on a ground out and Garrett Wolforth doubled to drive in Chinea. Wolforth later scored on a sacrifice fly. | Barry 4, NSU 3
  • T5 - Paul Salata, who had walked, scored on a double by Deyvid Silva. | Barry 5, NSU 3
  • T6 - After Alvarez had singled with one out, JC Garcia ripped a homer down the left field line. | Barry 7, NSU 3

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Anthony Gutierrez (2-0) turned in a dominant relief performance to pick up his second win of the season. In three scoreless innings, he scattered three hits and a walk and struck out four.
  • Hugo Casilla worked a perfect ninth, striking out two, to earn his first save.
  • Krzyzanowski (0-1) was tagged with the loss, the first of the year for the Sharks. In four innings, he gave up four runs on a six hits and a walk and struck out three.
  • Barry's bullpen had a great night, as Cade Middleton also went two innings, allowing a run on two hits and striking out three. For the group, they tossed six innings of one-run ball, on four hits and a walk and struck out nine.
  • Alvarez led the Bucs at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three singles and a homer. He scored twice and drove in three.
  • Garcia and Pino also both had two hits.
  • Wolforth, who was 2-for-5 with a double and a triple, scored twice, to lead the Sharks.
