Basketball Visits Rubin Arena To Face Sailfish

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers travel up to West Palm Beach, Fla., to take on the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish in a key pair of Sunshine State Conference basketball games on Wednesday, Feb. 20. The women tip at 5:30 pm, followed by the men at 7:30 pm.

Women's Basketball - Wednesday, Feb. 20; 5:30 pm; Rubin Arena

The Buccaneer women (9-15, 6-10 SSC) are coming off a 72-69 overtime win over Rollins on Homecoming last Saturday. Three different Buccaneers scored in double-figures with Tampa leading the charge with 19 points on 7-18 shooting. She also had a season-high seven steals. Juhnae Richardson had 17 points and Harriet Swindells 11. 

Tampa, Ida Andersson and Swindells all average double figures for the Bucs. Tampa lead the way with 15.1 points per game. She adds 5.0 assists, 3.3.7 assists and 3.2 steals per game. Andersson chips in 14.0 points and a team-best 7.0 rebounds. Swindells clocks in at 10.5 points and  1.7 assists.

The Sailfish (4-18, 2-14 SSC) are coming off a 63-42 loss to Eckerd on Saturday, but handed Florida Southern their second league loss last Wednesday in Lakeland. Against Eckerd, Jonika Garvin was the lone Sailfish with double-digit scoring as she put up 10 points while collecting eight rebounds.  

Garvin is the only player averaging double figures for the Sailfish on the year. She is tie for second in the conference at 18.0 points per game and leads the team with 8.3 rebounds per game.

GAME NOTES:

  • Barry leads the all-time series 24-6, although the Sailfish have won five times in 13 meetings in Rubin.
  • The Bucs won the earlier meeting 79-74 behind a career-high 30 points from Ida Andersson. Nichel Tampa chipped in 14 points and Harriet Swindells added 11. Jonika Garvin and Ciara Cumbie both had double-doubles for the 'Fish. Garvin had 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Cumbie had 11 points and 13 boards.

Men's Basketball - Wednesday, Feb. 20; 7:30 pm; Rubin Arena

The Buccaneer men (14-9, 9-7 SSC) knocked off Rollins on Saturday 76-61. Tylan Birts led the way with 22 points and eight rebounds. Daniel Mortensen and Marco Tomic each chipped in 12 points. 

Mortensen leads the team with 13.7 points per game and is shooting 40.4 percent from three-point range. Birts chips in 12.3 points per game and averages a team-best 5.9 rebounds. Moya's 4.0 assists per game top the squad.

The Sailfish (11-13, 7-9 SSC) beat Eckerd at home 65-54 oin Saturday. Bakari Warthen had 15 points on the night while De'Ondre Jackson had 12. Jules Jasmin also scored in the double digits with 10. 

Warthen, Jackson and Jasmin all average double figures on the season. Jackson is the leader at 14.8, while Jasmin averages 13.7 and Warthen 11.0.

  • The Sailfish won the earlier meeting 67-63 in Miami Shores. Milon Sheffield and Daniel Mortensen each had 13 points for the Bucs. Tylan Birts added 12 points and 12 rebounds. Malek Barber led the 'Fish with 18 points.
