MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Both of the Buccaneer tennis teams will travel to Orlando, Fla., this weekend to face off against Columbus State on Saturday and Valdosta State on Sunday at the USTA Training Center.
MEN'S
The men face two tough tests in Orlando this weekend, taking on the No. 1 and No. 8 teams in the country this weekend with Columbus State sitting atop the latest ITA national rankings and Valdosta State checking in at number eight. The Bucs are sandwiched between the two schools, sitting in at the No. 2 spot.
Barry opened their season last weekend when recorded a strong performance against No. 6 Flagler at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex. Barry swept through the doubles matchups and carried the momentum into singles play where they won all but one matchup.
The Bucs faced off against both of these schools last season with Barry and Columbus State's final matchup taking place in the national championship. Barry defeated both schools 5-3 in the regular season last year but Columbus State won the rematch, beating the Buccaneers in an extremely close match-up 5-4 in the championship match.
WOMEN'S
The top-ranked and reigning champion Buccaneer women's tennis team will look to keep up the momentum this week when they also take on Columbus State and Valdosta State this weekend. Columbus State comes in two paces behind the Bucs in the No. 3 spot in the latest ITA rankings. Valdosta State comes into the weekend after a rough start to the season, holding an 0-3 record including two 7-0 defeats by the hands of #25 Georgia College and #8 Nova Southeastern.
Like the men, the Bucs posted a dominant victory last weekend vs. Flagler College. The women won their matchup 6-0 and added another victory to their undefeated streak to make their record over the last two plus seasons 59-0.
Columbus State will look to get a measure of revenge this weekend as the Bucs dismantled them twice in 2018, including a 5-3 victory for Barry in the national semifinals.
