BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The third-seeded Barry Buccaneers set down #6 West Florida 25-17, 25-23, 9-25, 25-13 in the opening round of the NCAA South Region volleyball tournament at the de Hoernle Center on Thursday.

SUMMARY:
- Set 1 - Barry 25, UWF 17 - The Bucs exploded out of the gate, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. They powered to the finish, winning by eight. Both teams had 15 kills in the set, but the Bucs committed just two errors, while the Argonauts had eight. Megi Buvinic had six kills on 10 swings, helping the Bucs to a .289 attack percentage. Barry also won the battle at the net, posting five blocks.
- Set 2 - Barry 25, UWF 23 - Set two was a different story. The Argonauts cleaned up their attack, committing just one error, and won the blocking battle 3-0. But Barry pounded out 18 kills, led by six from Brittany Reynolds and UWF made three pivotal service errors late in the set as Barry pulled ahead two sets to none.
- Set 3 - UWF 25, Barry 9 - The Argonauts dominated the third set, making no attack errors and siding out at 90.0 percent (9-of-10). Barry never found a rhythm and West Florida pulled to within 2-1.
- Set 4 - Barry 25, UWF 13 - The Bucs re-established their dominance in the fourth set. The Bucs hit an outstanding .483 with 16 kills and just two errors. Buvinic was a pivotal player with six kills on 11 swings. She matched the entire UWF side in kills. The Bucs never let the Argonauts get on a roll, siding out on 11 of 14 opportunities.
NOTEWORTHY:
- Buvinic led all hitters with 18 kills and also posted 14 digs for a double-double.
- Kristina Filimonova added 13 kills and three blocks.
- Bianca Paşca had 39 assists and 11 digs for a double-double of her own.
- Audren Rose paced the Bucs' defense with 19 digs.
- Veresia Von led UWF with 13 kills and JoDee Kovanda added 10. But South Region player of the year Jordyn Poppen was limited to just eight kills and nine digs.
ON THE HORIZON:
The Bucs take on the Tampa Spartans at 5:00 pm on Friday, Dec. 6 in the regional semifinals. The Spartans defeated Alabama-Huntsville 3-0.
