Women's Basketball Loses Conference Opener

Bucs fall to Florida Southern at home

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers lost their Sunshine State Conference women's basketball opener to the Florida Southern Moccasins 59-54 on Cesar Odio Court on Saturday.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - Despite connecting on just 23.5 percent from the floor, the Bucs forged a 15-9 lead in the first quarter. Harriet Swindells led the way with a pair of three-pointers and the Bucs did not turn the ball over once. | Barry 15, FSC 9
  • 2Q - The Bucs used a very balanced attack to extend the lead in the second period. The Bucs shot 50 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Mocs 10-9. Six different players each sank one basket. | Barry 30, FSC 21
  • 3Q - The Bucs and Mocs played even in the third period, each scoring 16 points. Neither team shot the ball particularly well, with Barry connecting at a 35.3 percentage and Florida Southern hitting just 28.6 percent from the field. | Barry 46, FSC 37
  • 4Q - The Bucs led 50-42 after a Johanna Kampp layup with 5:30 to play. But the Mocs went on an 11-0 run, as Barry shot 0-for-2 from the floor, 0-for-2 from the line and turned the ball over three times. NOTEWORTHY:

  • Swindells led Barry with 11 points and Tampa added 10. 
  • Nerea Baena, with 11, and Emma Hergot, with 10, led the Bucs on the boards. 
  • Florida Southern shot just 29.9 percent from the floor, but had one more three pointer and made four more free throws than the Bucs.
  • Mackenzie Steele had 12 points off the bench to lead the Mocs. Julie Jenike chipped in 11. 
  • The Bucs held a 28-18 edge in the paint, but FSC out-scored the Bucs 31-9 off the bench.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs host the Cesar Odio Classic after Thanksgiving, facing 11th-ranked Alaska-Anchorage on Friday and Daemen on Saturday.
