ROME, Ga.--Barry's Alejandro Ibañez Gallego won the ITA Division II men's tennis singles championship on Sunday at the Rome Tennis Center over the top seed from Columbus State.
Ibañez Gallego, the second seed, defeated number one Alvaro Regulato 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 to claim the singles title at the ITA Cup.
Ibañez Gallego is the fourth Buccaneer to win the NCAA Division II singles title. Senior Emanuel Fraitzl won the title in 2010. Herbert Bende brought home the championship as a freshman in 1995, while Christian Witt was a junior in 1999 when he won the title.
Fraitzl and now Ibañez Gallego both won the team title in the spring and then brought home the singles title in the fall.
For four of the last six major titles, the Buccaneers and Cougars have squared off for the title. The Cougars won the team title in 2018 and KP Pannu won the singles title in the fall of 2018. The Bucs brought home the team trophy in the spring of 2019 and now Ibañez Gallego is the singles champ this fall.
