Women's Basketball Drops Home Game To Spartans

Bucs fall by two points

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers came up just short, 64-62, to the Tampa Spartans on Saturday on Cesar Odio Court in Sunshine State Conference women's basketball action.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - The Spartans built a double figure lead in the first period, as Barry hit just 3-of-20 from the field. | Tampa 17, Barry 7
  • 2Q - Although Tampa extended the lead out to as many as 14 points, Barry rallied back to make it a two-possession game, 30-24, on a jumper by Juhnae Richardson with 2:32 left. Neither team scored in the final two minutes of the period. | Tampa 33, Barry 24
  • 3Q - Trailing 45-32 with 4:04 left in the third, Barry used a 12-0 run to cut the lead to one point, 45-44, on a layup by Charlotte Armstrong. Tampa's Kris Nelson hit a triple to make the margin 48-44 at the break. | Tampa 48, Barry 44
  • 4Q - Tampa again pushed the lead to double figures, 54-44, on back-to-back three-pointers by Emily Eshoo and Julia Ingram to start the period. The Bucs, however, would not go away, chipping into the lead and making it a one-basket game on several occasions as their press gave the Spartans trouble. With 0:21 seconds left, Nichel Tampa converted a three-point play in the lane to get the Bucs to one point, 63-62. NOTEWORTHY:

  • Tampa led Barry with 17 points, while Richardson came off the bench to add 16.
  • Staja Tyghter had 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead Tampa. Eshoo added 19 points and Nelson had 10.
  • Tampa out-shot the Buccaneers 57.8 percent to 36.4. 
  • Barry led on the boards, however 40-29 and forced 15 turnovers while committing just five.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry hosts cross-town rival Nova Southeastern on Wednesday, Jan. 30.
