ATHENS, Ga. -- Barry University's men's tennis team opened the fall season at the ASI Championships hosted by the University of Georgia on Friday. The Buccaneers won four out of nine singles matchups on the day.
THE MATCHUPS
The Bucs faced tough competition on Friday, with eight of their nine matches taking place against Division I opponents.
SUMMARY:
- The Bucs got off to a rough start with Carlos Gomez losing a tough match (6-4, 6-1) to Arkansas' Adam Sanjurjo followed by Flavio Matteoli suffering a close defeat (7-5, 6-4) to Colorado State's Tommaso Schold.
- Barry's next match was a battle in a three-setter with Vivien Versier coming out victorious over Mercer's Mico Buillon (1-6, 6-0, 6-1).
- Another three-set match took place next with Daniel Ventura coming up just short vs. ETSU's David Gonzalez (3-6, 6-1, 6-0) followed up by Ignasi Forcano falling to Arkansas's Jose Alonso in two close sets (6-4, 6-3).
- Fortunes began to change for the Bucs though when they rattled off four straight victories.
- Pierre Mondtrieul strung together two straight wins over Georgia College's Jannik Kumbier (6-1, 6-2) and Mercer's David Georgadze (6-7, 6-2, 6-3) to advance to the round of 16.
- Buccaneers Blake Balydon and Vivien Versier also recorded a win in their respective brackets to advance themselves into tomorrow's play.
ON THE HORIZON:
Barry will look to repeat their success tomorrow during day two of the ASI Championships as singles play continues and doubles matches begin during the day.
