LAKELAND, Fla. -- Barry's second-seeded Pierre Montrieul knocked off first-seeded Jordi Mas from Valdosta State 7-5, 7-5 to capture gold on Monday at the ITA South Regional Championship.

THE MATCHUPS

The ITA regional features several NCAA DII schools including SSC opponents Nova Southeastern, Rollins, Saint Leo, Embry-Riddle, Lynn, Florida Southern, Florida Tech and Palm Beach Atlantic.

SUMMARY:

• Singles
  • Montrieul swept through the field, taking down the opponents from Auburn-Montgomery, Lynn, Embry-Riddle and Valdosta State on the way to the title.

NOTEWORTHY:

• Montrieul joins Herbert Bende (1994), Christian Witt (1999), Emanuel Fraitzl (2010) and Ahmed Triki (2016) as regional champs from Barry. 

ON THE HORIZON:

• Montrieul advances to the ITA Small College Nationals Oct. 11-14 in Rome, Ga.
