LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Buccaneers men's tennis team contended on the first two days of the ITA South Regional hosted by Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fla, advancing two players to the semifinals of the singles bracket and also elevating one of their doubles team to the quarterfinals.

THE MATCHUPS

The ITA regional feature several NCAA DII schools including SSC opponents Nova Southeastern, Rollins, Saint Leo, Embry Riddle, Lynn, Florida Southern, Florida Tech and Palm Beach Atlantic.

SUMMARY:

• Barry played very well in the singles bracket with two of their players advancing to the semifinals.
  • Vivien Versier and Blake Bayldon both won a pair of their respective matches and advanced to the round of 16 before falling to higher-seeded opponents. Versier lost a close match to the tournament's top seed: Valdosta State's Jordi Mas 7-6, 6-4. 
  • Daniel Ventura made it all the way to the quarterfinals, displaying dominant play on the way there including a 6-1, 6-0 scorecard over FT's Jamison Burch before exiting after a loss to VSU's Xavi Pineda 6-2, 6-1.
  • Pierre Montrieul met the expectations that come along with the second-seed he was given in the bracket, winning three matches including a poised showing in the quarterfinals in which he defeated an SSC opponent in Embry-Riddle's Juan Ortiz Couder 6-4, 6-1.
  • Carlos Gomez will try to avenge Versier when he takes on Mas in the semifinals tomorrow. Gomez won all three of his matches with 6-2, 6-4 scorecards.
• The Bucs had and up-and-down day in the doubles bracket.
  • The duo of Gomez and Versier dropped their opening game to Rollins' Gai Feigin and Ziad Melhaoui 8-5.
  • Montrieul and Bayldon find themselves in the quarterfinals after running through two SSC opponents. The Barry duo defeated Florida Southern's John Sakellarides and Brian Pham 9-7 before beating Rollins' Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz and Atakan Gezer 8-5.

ITA Regional play continues tomorrow with the conclusion of the singles bracket and the continuation of the doubles bracket.
