Volleyball Experiences First Loss of the Season vs. No. 3 PBA

MIAMI SHORES, FL. – The Barry Buccaneers (12-1, 4-1 SSC) came up short to No. 3 Palm Beach Atlantic (13-0, 5-0 SSC) 3-1 at the Greene Sports Complex in West Palm Beach on Tuesday night.

The loss is the first of the season for the Buccaneers who have already set several school records through their first 13 matches. Barry went toe-to-toe with No. 3 PBA despite having several key players out of the lineup due to injury. However, Barry head coach, Steve Hendricks will never use that as an excuse with his team and knows the Sunshine State Conference schedule doesn't lighten up. "We lost to a good team," Hendricks said. "Our conference is very tough.  Hopefully we can get back on track this weekend against Eckerd on the road."

The Bucs led the majority of the way in the first and third sets - eventually dropping both to the Sailfish. Tonight's match is only the third this season that required a fourth set for the Buccaneers. Junior middle-blocker, Kristina Filimonova finished tying her season-high in kills with 17 against the Sailfish. Filimonova was named SSC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after recording 31 kills in two victories over Saint Leo and Florida Southern.

The Buccaneers received 66 votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll when it was released on Monday.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Game One Final: #3 PBA 3, Barry 1
Records: Barry (12-1, 4-1 SSC), #3 PBA (13-0, 5-0 SSC)
All-Time Series: Barry is 12-16 against PBA

SUMMARY:

  • 1st set | Despite struggling offensively, the Bucs found themselves on top during the majority of the set. With the score tied at 20, the Sailfish went on a 5-1 run to finish things out.
  • 2nd set | Barry answered right back opening the set on a 5-1 run. The Bucs lead grew to double digits late in the set, 20-10 in large part with the play of freshman Bianca Pasca's five kills, 19 assists and three digs through the first two sets.
  • 3rd set | Barry led 21-16 before PBA went on a 6-0 run to take the lead, 22-21. Kishara Gordon had two huge kills late in the set that led to back-to-back points for Barry. First at 22-22 to stop the PBA run, then again at 23-23. A service error by PBA kept Barry alive at 24-24 before the Bucs surrendered the set 27-25. Junior Megi Buvinic was an issue for the Sailfish with eight kills in the set.
  • 4th set | Barry dug themselves a hole early that they could not recover from. The Sailfish jumped out to an 11-6 lead that prompted Hendricks to call timeout. PBA recorded five-of-their-14 blocks in the final set.

NOTEWORTHY:.

  • Buvinic set a season-high with 18 kills and finished one dig shy of a double-double.
  • Madison Yarborough tied a season-high in digs with 12.
  • Filimonova was relied on heavily with 48 attempts - which sets a season-high.
