Women's Tennis Shreds Sharks in Schram's Return

No. 3 Buccaneers head to Melbourne Thursday for battle vs. No. 9 Academy of Art

DAVIE, Fla. -- Steve Schram admitted he was a little nervous about it going in. Well, the Buccaneers assistant coach didn't have to fret too long as the No. 3-ranked women's team in the country took care of business in a 7-2 win at No. 24 Nova Southeastern Tuesday in Schram's return to his old stomping grounds.

"It's always good to be back here," said Schram, a former head coach at Nova Southeastern, whom he guided to a consistent Top 15 program in such a short time. "We had a great three years. We were Top 5 in the country at one point. To come back here to share those memories was just awesome."

Especially after he and the Bucs picked up another win in what is shaping up to a challenging week with two more matches on the docket. The Sharks forfeited two matches at their bottom spots in both doubles and singles, but the play of Verena Schmid and Sonja Larsen, coupled with the always-game Julie Razafindranaly and some more steady doubles play from Zuza Maciejewska and Carolin Schmidt was all the medicine this Barry team needed to remain unscathed.

"It took the first four or five games to really get our feet wet, but after the first four or five games I felt like we really took over in doubles," Schram said. "The girls are just outstanding. They know where to be on the court. They know where to hit the serves and where to volley, and I think that really helps us out a lot."
