Record Falls as No. 3 Women's Tennis Shuts Out No. 23 St. Thomas

Larsen breaks school career singles record

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Four years ago, Sonja Larsen was in to playing her loud German music while off on her own in the Barry University Tennis Hut.

Little did she know she wasn't alone.

The music was blaring, and it was such a paradox from the persona the once-shy German tennis star carried in her visible body language. Well, people change, and Sonja Larsen isn't so shy anymore.

In fact, the No. 1-ranked singles player in the country is making some pretty loud statements these days, and she doesn't even have to say anything. The results speak for themselves.

Larsen broke the school career singles victory record with a 6-0, 6-1 win over St. Thomas' Cynthia Diaz at the No. 3 spot Thursday in the No. 3 Buccaneers' 9-0 shutout of the No. 23 Bobcats. Larsen, a senior from Verden, Germany, surpassed Greta Trotman (2003-06) on the all-time list, improving to 13-0 this season and 74-5 in her career.

"I'm pretty happy about this," Larsen said. "Even without the record, it's been an amazing time up until now. On and off the court, it was an amazing environment to be in. It's pretty nice to be around people you get along with."

Not to mention win with constantly.

"I knew I could achieve the record, but I'm looking forward to the next step like conference and nationals," Larsen said.
