No. 2 Women's Tennis Marches by Cleveland State

Bucs sweep doubles for 11th time; prepare for Kokomo Wednesday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- It was just another day at the office for Barry University's women's tennis team.

Another Division I opponent, another Buccaneer victory.

Barry's second-ranked team handled its business with Cleveland State Wednesday, winning, 7-2, on a brisk, yet sunny day at Buccaneer Tennis Center. Barry's 42nd-ranked Verena Schmid was on top of her game, No. 1 Sonja Larsen inched closer to the coveted school record, Zuza Maciejewska was on top of her game -- even if she led you to believe otherwise -- and the doubles teams, well, they won handily in the mid-week match.

Next up, another match on Thursday.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final: Barry 7, Cleveland State 2
Records: Barry (13-0), Cleveland State (4-10)

DOUBLES:

  • Carolin Schmidt and Zuza Maciejewska were 8-2 winners over Aleksandra Golawska and Jana Schober at No. 1.
  • Larsen and Schmid rode their 14th-ranked tandem to an 8-1 victory over Isabella Spindler and Blanche Lenoan at the middle position.
  • Julie Razafindranaly and Hannah Seizer finished off the sweep with an 8-4 decision over Gaby Schoenberg and Anastasia Perin at No. 3.
  • It was the  11th time this season Barry has swept pairs play.

SINGLES:

  • Larsen beat Golawska, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3 singles to move within one of tying the school career singles victories record.
  • Schmid coasted in her No. 2 match with Schoenberg, not dropping a game in a match she was on point from start to finish.
  • Maciejewska defeated Perin, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 in a match where she was hitting her customary nonchalant volleys with ease, using her forehand to maneuver her opponent around and doing enough to win the majority of the points. She may tell you that wasn't the case, but Maciejewska was in command most of the match.
  • Schmidt needed a third-set super tiebreaker to pull out her win over Schober, 2-6, 6-2, 10-1. Schmidt rallied from behind, and won the tough points when it mattered most to lock up the Bucs four singles victories.
  • The Vikings picked up their two points at the top and the bottom of the singles lineup.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • It is Barry's third win over a Division I opponent this season.
  • Larsen moved within one singles victory of tying Greta Trotman (2003-06) for the most in school history. Trotman had 73 wins in her singles career.
  • Schmid won for the fourth time without surrendering a game this season. She is tied with Schmidt for the most victories without giving up a game on the team this season.
  • Larsen's 72 career singles victories moved her into second place all alone. She passed Valeria Papandrea's 71 wins that came during the 2000-03 seasons.
  • Larsen has 79 career doubles victories, which ranks third on the all-time list behind Linda Fritschken's 96 from 2012-15, and Ana Pain's 83 from 2014-17.

ON THE HORIZON:

Thursday, the Bucs will meet the likes of NAIA Indiana-Kokomo at 3 p.m. at Buccaneer Tennis Center.
