Men's Hoops Tripped Up by Tampa

Buccaneers to host SSC quarters Wednesday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University men's basketball team has had its troubles with Tampa. That is for sure.

The Buccaneers suffered a setback to the Spartans again on Saturday, losing, 78-72, at Cesar Odio Court in the Health & Sports Center in the regular season finale.

The loss took away from the Sunshine State Conference regular season title, but more importantly sent the Bucs into the postseason with a bitter feeling.

"Our guys are upset  with the loss," Bucs coach Butch Estes said. "But they're more upset about the way we played."

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final: Tampa 78, Barry 72
Records: Barry (18-7, 14-6 SSC), Tampa (9-16, 6-14 SSC)
All-Time Series: Tampa leads, 44-27

  • The Buccaneers built a 34-27 lead in a sluggish first half, where their listless play was indicative of the type of outcome that ensued. Barry let the Spartans hang around long enough, and Tampa's athleticism caught up to the Bucs.
  • Barry shot 39 percent from the floor -- their lowest since a loss at Palm Beach Atlantic on Jan. 31. Tampa connected on 48 percent of its field goals, winning its final game of the season.
  • The Buccaneers were outscored, 51-38, in the second half. The Bucs led by seven on a layup by Fridriksson with 16:37 to go, but Marcel Robinson hit a 3 with 7:43 remaining to put the Spartans ahead by one. Duke Shelton's bucket with 3:10 remaining put the Spartans up two again before Marko Tomic sank two free throws to tie the game for the seventh time with 1:48 left.
  • Following a Bucs turnover, Pat Bacon sank two free throws to give Tampa a 71-67 lead at the 1:10 mark. Sawyer Glick canned a triple on the next trip down the floor to cut the gap to one, but Robinson hit a layup, driving right through the heart of the Bucs defense, and Barry could not find an answer on either end of the floor the rest of the way.
  • Bucs senior guard Elvar Fridriksson had 10 points and 10 assists, but was 0 of 5 from three-point range. Sawyer Glick scored 12 points and grabbed five boards. Daniel Mortensen had 10 points, and Sunday Dech 13 points, nine boards, two blocks and three steals. Kooper Glick had nine points and five boards.
  • Robinson scored 35 points on 15 of 29 shooting. Shelton had 15 points and 18 rebounds.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • It was Fridriksson's fourth double-double of the season. He's had 10 assists in all four games this season.
  • Robinson's 35 points is the most by an opponent this season.
  • Barry's bench outscored Tampa, 27-5.
