Fine Finish: Women's Basketball Tames Tampa in Thriller

Barry to host SSC quarters Wednesday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barbara Cousiño played the role as hero on Senior Day Saturday, and Barry University's women's basketball team won a thriller over Tampa, 59-58, at Cesar Odio Court in the Health & Sports Center.

Cousiño hit an off-balance, leaning three-pointer off an inbounds play with one second remaining as the Buccaneers beat Tampa in a back-and-forth absolute gem.

"To be honest, I wasn't expecting the shot," said Cousiño, who finished with 15 points on 6 of 14 shooting, seven rebounds and four assists. "I was like, 'OK, I have to shoot it.'"

That she did, adding another last-second thriller to Barry's lore this year in an emotional game that featured 13 lead changes and 10 ties.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - The Buccaneers raced out to an 18-9 lead on a basket by Kiara Palmer with 2:49 to play in the period. Ida Andersson's bucket in the paint made it an 11-point lead for the Bucs at the 1:08 mark. | Barry 22, Tampa 13
  • 2Q - Tampa cut it to two on Karma Jeremie's basket at the 6:22 mark. It wasn't until the clock read 5:53 in the quarter that Barry scored -- that on a basket by Harriet Swindells. But the Spartans tied the game at 29 on Staja Tyghter's jumper with 1:49 remaining in the half before Stephane Granada's jumper in the paint sent the Bucs into the break up two. | Barry 31, Tampa 29
  • 3Q - Elin Ekdahl gave Barry a three-point lead with 4:57 left in the third when she buried one of her two triples. But the Spartans kept answering, taking a 41-40 lead on Jeremie's basket with 2:26 on the quarter clock. Tyghter's fastbreak bucket sent the Spartans into the fourth with a three-point cushion. | Tampa 43, Barry 40
  • 4Q - Cousiño and Swindells hit back-to-back threes as Barry regained the lead. Tampa jumped back in front three more times -- the third time on a pair of Rachel Warden free throws. Swindells canned another three to tie it at 51-51. The Spartans regained the lead on Emily Eshoo's basket at the 2:05 mark, but Cousiño canned a triple on the next trip down the floor to put the Bucs ahead, 54-53. The two teams traded leads three more times before Cousiño hit the gamewinner. | Barry 59, Tampa 58
