Buccaneers hit road next weekend for three matches

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Sonja Larsen was serving for set point when something changed.

She dropped the next two points, putting her at advantage out. Then something changed again. Quickly. As in the form of a first-serve ace.

Larsen, the No. 1-ranked player in the country, ripped an ace into the deep corner of the box to force deuce. She then won the next two points to take the opening set on her way to a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Fabiana Vitanza at No. 1 singles in Barry's 9-0 sweep of Rollins Sunday at Buccaneer Tennis Center.

It was that little adversity, and a couple teeter-totter games in the second set that maybe the No. 2-ranked Bucs needed as they head on the road next week for their stiffest challenge thus far. A day after being honored in front of a packed Health & Sports Center crowd on ESPN3, the Bucs brandished their racquets like they meant business again -- even if the final score suggested they had a few ups and downs with the Tars.

In the end, it amounted to the fourth opponent the Bucs have swept this season.

SUMMARY:

  • Barry made it 18 for 18 in doubles this season after sweeping their sixth opponent in pairs play.
  • The Bucs' 14th-ranked duo of Verena Schmid and Larsen blanked Alex Borg and Vitanza, 8-0, at the top position. Hannah Seizer and Julie Razafindranaly beat Savanna Fuller and Carlye Goldman, 8-3, at No. 2. Carolin Schmidt and Zuza Maciejewska beat Teresa Kaiser and Marie Debruyn, 8-2, at the No. 3 spot in the lineup.
  • Schmidt coasted by Fuller without dropping a game in straight sets at No. 4 singles. Schmid clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Goldman at No. 3.
  • Larsen's win made it 6-0 before Razafindranaly extended her team-best singles winning streak to six in a row when she authored a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Kaiser at No. 5.
  • Judith Bohnenkamp, inserted into the singles lineup when Maciejewska was pulled after pairs play, overcame Love-1 deficits in both sets to run past Debruyn with six straight games in each set.
  • Seizer won the first set, 6-2, against Borg before finding herself down a game in the second. But the first-year Buccaneer won the next game to tie it at 2-2 before Borg picked up another game. Seizer won the sixth game to square it at 3-3 before Borg retired.
  • Seizer improved to 3-0 at No. 2 singles.
