Men's Basketball Knocks Off Tampa On The Road

Mortensen with a season-high 23 points

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers rebounded for their first Sunshine State Conference win on Saturday as they knocked off the Tampa Spartans 83-71 in the Martinez Center for the second year in a row.

SUMMARY:

  • 1H - The game was close early on with two ties and three lead changes in the first seven minutes. But after the Spartans tied the game at 9-9 on a jumper by Anthony Gamble, the Bucs went on a 9-2 run over the next 2:17. Tylan Birts put the capper on the run with a dunk in transition. Daniel Mortensen had 18 of the Bucs' 39 points in the half, hitting 5-of-6 from three-point range. | Barry 39, Tampa 27
  • 2H - The Bucs maintained a solid lead, mostly in double figures, for large portions of the second half. But the Spartans went on a 9-2 run of their own over 1:18 to cut the lead with 11 points to four, 62-58 on a three-pointer by Freddy Ibrahim with 8:07 to play. Barry righted the ship, however, by reeling off 18 of the next 23 points to take their biggest lead of the game, 80-63, on a transition layup by Evan Walshe with 4:22 left. NOTEWORTHY:

  • Mortensen had a team-high 23 points on 6-of-8 shooting from three-point range. Birts and Tomic each added 13, while David Moya had 12 points and five assists.
  • Alberto Moreno led the Spartans with 16 points. Gamble and Ibrahim each had 11.
