Women's Basketball Falls To #8/12 Panthers

Bucs drop to 2-3 on the season

DAVIE, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers stayed close early, before the powerful Virginia Union Panthers pulled away for an 82-58 women's basketball win in the Nova Southeastern Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday in Rick Case Arena.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - The Bucs jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first 1:50 of the game. The Bucs hit their first three shots, including a couple of fast break baskets byb Nichel Tampa and Ida Andersson. Meanwhile, the Panthers missed their first four shots and quickly called a timeout. Coming out of the break, The Panthers rolled out an 11-5 run, tying the game 11-11 on a layup by Ifunanya Okoye with 4:24 left in the period. With the score tied 16-16, the Panthers scored the last five points in the period. | VUU 21, Barry 16
  • 2Q - Though the Panthers hit only 10-of-21 from the field in the second quarter, they out-scored the Bucs 24-12 thanks to five offensive rebounds. The Panthers owned the boards 14-9 in the frame to carry a 17-point lead into the half. | VUU 45, Barry 28
  • 3Q - The Bucs came out of the break and made a move, cutting the lead to 13 points on several occasions, but the Panthers continued to push forward and made the lead 15 points on a pair of free throws by Bianca Lockamy with 1:14 left. | VUU 59, Barry 44
  • 4Q - The Bucs continued to chip into the lead, getting as close as 11 points. But leading 67-56 after a Carley Sanders layup in transition with 3:55 left, the Panthers went on a 15-2 run to close the game. | VUU 82, Barry 58 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Emma Hergot and Sanders led the Bucs with 13 points each. For Hergot, it was a career-high in her first season.
  • Shareka McNeil led every player with 23 points. Okoye came off the bench with 20 points and Rejoice Spivey added 10.
  • The Panthers out-rebounded the Bucs 45-30, including 15-8 on the offensive end.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs tip off Sunshine State Conference play on Wednesday, Nov. 28 when they head back to Rick Case Arena to face the NSU Sharks.
