Men's Hoops Stomps St. Thomas

BarryU put an all-around performance together in their 86-60 victory over Bobcats

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Thursday night saw another superb team effort from the Barry University men's basketball team as the Bucs dominated in a 86-60 victory over the St. Thomas Bobcats. The Bucs didn't hesitate to go to the bench early and it paid dividends with the Bucs' bench recording 43 points compared to just 12 for the Bobcats.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final: Barry 86, St. Thomas 60.
Barry leads series 13-12

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

"I thought it was a great win. I'm just so pleased with how well we're playing defensively," head coach Butch Estes said. "We're obviously getting a lot of different players minutes and it has provided valuable experience to our young players that will help us down the line. I love the way our upperclassmen are leading. We had four guys in double figures. David Moya and Daniel Mortensen both displayed their excellent passing skills tonight while limiting their turnovers."

SUMMARY:

  • David Moya found Isaiah Hobbs on a fast break midway through the first half. The senior caught the ball at mid-court and took one dribble before taking off for a dunk to put the Bucs up by 9.
  • The Bucs showed off their ball movement with five minutes left in the first period when Tylan Birts passed the ball out from under the rim and the rest of the four Bucs players swung the ball around the three-point line in a sequence that would fittingly end with a Daniel Mortensen three-pointer in the corner to extend Barry's lead to 14.
  • Leandro Allende showed off his post moves eight minutes into the second half when he faked out a Bobcat defender with an up-and-under before converting the basket despite a foul by another Bobcat. The field goal and subsequent free throw pushed the Bucs' lead all the way to 33.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Bucs once again showed off their depth with 14 different players recording playing time and four different players scoring in the double-digits. Moya led the Bucs with 14 points and Evan Walshe added 13. Allende came off the bench with 12 and Hobbs had 11, also as a reserve.
  • BarryU's starting guards put together an excellent shooting performance from deep with Walshe and Moya combining to go 7-for-9 from behind the arc.
  • Mortensen had a good night, other than shooting where that three-pointer in the corner was his only basket. But he had three rebounds, a team-high five assists, two blocks and a steal and did not commit a turnover.
  • The Bucs continued to impose their will physically, dominating the boards by a 51-29 margin, including 15-8 on the offensive end.
  • The Bucs also held the Bobcats to 32.1 percent shooting, including just 5-of-23 from three-point range.
  • Under NAIA rules, the game was an exhibition for the Bobcats, but a regular counter for the Bucs.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs next matchup takes place next Tuesday on Nov. 20 when they face off against another Sun Conference opponent in the Keiser Seahawks at 7:00 pm on Cesar Odio Court.
