MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry women's soccer team is restarting its season this week after a lengthy hiatus caused by Hurricane Irma.
"Obviously, it's been a difficult situation," head coach Sarah Dacey said. "We did the best we could to communicate with team on what to do on own as they were away from campus. And now, we've been training really hard, probably harder than we would at this point of the season. But we've got some really difficult games coming up, so we need to have some mental toughness moving forward and come together as a team to put our best foot forward."
The Buccaneers take on Rollins in Winter Park, Fla., on Saturday at Cahill-Sandspur Field at 7:00 pm. It will be the Sunshine State Conference opener for the Bucs. The Tars defeated Florida Southern 1-0 on Wednesday in their first conference game.
The Bucs last took the field on Sept. 3, marking an almost three-week layoff. In their two games, the Bucs defeated Felician 3-0, but fell to North Alabama 3-2. Amanda Traynor leads the team with two goals. Sofia de la Puente and Gabby Sanon each have a goal and an assist. Carissa Sanchez leads the team with two assists. Melanie Ziegner has started both games in goal, posting a 1-1-0 record and a 1.66 goals against average.
The Tars did not face quite as long a layoff, missing just one game, leaving them with a 2-3-0 record. All five games for the Tars have been decided by a single goal. The Tars, one of the top offensive squads in the SSC over the last several years, have scored just three goals in five games, though they have also allowed only four. Three players, Yaya Mbengue, Kiera McMeekan and Karina Santin, have each scored one goal, while McMeekan and Santin have added assists, along with Jill Ricahrds. Keeper Kelly Roswell is 2-3-0 with two shutouts and a 0.89 goals against average.
