Men's Tennis Shuts Out North Alabama to Open NCAA Tourney

Bucs move on to South Region Finals noon Sunday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's men's tennis team will get a rematch with Valdosta State in the NCAA Division II South Region Championship match Sunday after both teams picked up shutout victories in the semifinals Saturday.

The second-seeded Buccaneers swept seventh-seeded North Alabama, 5-0, at Buccaneer Tennis Center. Third-seeded Valdosta State was a 5-0 winner over sixth-seeded Rollins.

After the Bucs won all three doubles matches -- the top two positions by 8-4 scores -- Thomas Bugeaud and Nico Dreer won their respective Nos. 6 and 4 singles matches to send Barry on to Sunday's Finals. The second-ranked Bucs fell to fifth-ranked Blazers, 5-4, in last year's South Region Final at Buccaneer Tennis Center.

SUMMARY:

  • Fernando Tous and Dreer put the Bucs on the board with an 8-1 victory over Ray Donovan and Gustavo Girao at No. 3 doubles.
  • No. 25-ranked Carlos Gomez and Vivien Versier  made it 2-0 when they beat Miguel Garcia and Taylor Ausbon, 8-4, at the No. 2 position. Second-ranked Ahmed Triki and Pierre Montrieul completed the pairs sweep with an 8-4 win over Max Druppel and Benjamin Poire at No. 1 doubles.
  • Bugeaud rolled over Ausbon, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.
  • Dreer, who is ranked No. 47 in the country, was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Girao at No. 4.
  • Fabian Pronnet led Donovan, 6-3, 3-2, at No. 5 singles when Dreer clinched. 
  • Gomez, who holds the No. 13 national singles ranking, was up on Poire, 6-2, 4-0, at No. 3 singles.
  • Twenty sixth-ranked Montrieul won the first set against Garcia, 6-4, but trailed in the second, 4-0.
  • Triki, who is No. 3 in the nation, dropped the opening set to Druppel, 6-2, before getting out to a 4-1 lead in the second.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Buccaneers have advanced to the Region Finals 16 straight years.
  • Barry is in search of its 13th NCAA South Region title. The Bucs' last region championship came in 2015. 
  • Triki moved into second place on the school's all-time doubles victories list (80) after moving past Marco Mokrzycki. He is two pairs wins away from tying Ollie LeMaitre for the most in Barry history. 
  • Triki's .860 doubles winning percentage moved ahead of Sergio Velez (.859) for the best in school history.
  • Dreer moved into a three-way tie for fifth on the career singles list with Sebastian Losavio and Emmanuel Fraitzl at 62 victories. 
  • Triki's .902 singles winning percentage ranks second in Buccaneer history. Dreer's .861 winning percentage is fourth all time.
