No. 2 Men's Tennis Shuts Door on No. 3 Seahawks

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – In the final regular season match of the season, the Buccaneers sent their seniors out with a win.

NCAA Division II No. 2-ranked Barry men's tennis team beat NAIA No. 3 Keiser, 8-1, Wednesday at Buccaneer Tennis Center on a day seniors Nico Dreer and Ahmed Triki were honored for their four-year accomplishments.

Dreer delivered two points for the Bucs, winning with Fernando Tous at No. 3 doubles, while also picking up a victory at No. 3 singles.

SUMMARY:

  • After the Seahawks tied the match at 1-1 with an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles, Dreer and Tous found themselves in a battle with Clement Raymond and Arthur Bonnaud at No. 3 pairs. But with the score tied 6-6, the Bucs duo won the final two games to send Barry into the singles break ahead 2-1. 
  • Dreer, who is ranked 46th in the country, put the Buccaneers up 3-1, becoming the first to finish in singles with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over 35th-ranked Julian Turosienski at the No. 3 position.  
  • Eleventh-ranked Carlos Gomez defeated No. 36 Sebastian Penaloza, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. That moved the Bucs within a point of clinching.
  • Thomas Bugeaud sealed the win when he beat Romai Ugarte, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5 singles.
  • Pierre Montrieul, who owns the No. 26 ranking, pulled out a 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 victory over 30th-ranked Bastien Sorg at No. 2 singles. 
  • Fabian Pronnet won 6-2, 7-5 over 44th-ranked Bonnaud.
  • Vivien Versier was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Shaquille Taylor. 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Dreer won his 60th career singles match to move within seven of tying the school record. 
  • The Bucs are 7-1 against nationally-ranked opponents this season. 
  • Barry went 12-0 at home in the regular season.
  • Gomez and Versier, who are ranked 25th in the country, won their ninth straight No. 2 doubles match. They are 12-1 this season.


ON THE HORIZON:

Barry will compete in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament April 20-22 in Bradenton, Fla.
