MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University's second-ranked men's tennis team made a statement Sunday -- a loud one.
The Buccaneers blanked No. 3 Saint Leo, 9-0, at Buccaneer Tennis Center to remain at the top of the Sunshine State Conference standings.
Barry won every match featuring ranked players with Ahmed Triki, Pierre Montrieul, Carlos Gomez, Vivien Versier and Nico Dreer combining for those six victories in doubles and singles. It came with resistance, however, as 25th ranked Gomez and Versier needed a gutcheck to pull out a 9-8 (8-6) win over Francisco Aparicio and Oskar Nurmio at No. 2 doubles. The Bucs duo trailed 5-3 in the tiebreaker.
Ranked No. 2 in singles, Triki survived a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) test from No. 14 Thomas Grinberg, at the No. 1 position in the final match to finish. Gomez, who is 11th in the country, rallied to beat No. 45 Vincent Suillerot, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8, at No. 2 singles.
