MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry found itself in a predicament it had not been in this season. So with their backs against the wall, the seventh-ranked Buccaneers did what they have repeatedly done best over the years.
They battled and responded.
The Bucs remained unbeaten two weeks into the season after recovering from a doubles deficit to play strong singles tennis en route to Sunday's win over No. 10 Embry-Riddle, which will become a full member of the Sunshine State Conference next season. Yet Sunday's victory didn't come without a scare. Both from a team and individual standpoint.
In the end, the Buccaneers prevailed in both cases.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final: Barry 6, Embry-Riddle 3
Records: Barry 3-0, Embry-Riddle 2-2
SUMMARY:
- After Barry's Vivien Versier and Fernando Tous won the first point, claiming the No. 3 doubles match, Embry-Riddle pulled out back-to-back tiebreaker wins at the top two doubles positions. In the featured pairs match, Barry's Ahmed Triki and Pierre Montrieul went back-and-forth, fighting from a break down before putting themselves in position to take another doubles point -- this one from Carlos Becke and Deepak Vishavkarma. But after trading points, let alone match points with the Eagles' top pair on two occasions, the Buccaneers fell victim, 9-8 (11-9), in a great doubles match. Carlos Gomez and Thomas Bugeaud lost to the Eagles' No. 2 team of Juan Ortiz Couder and Mickael Faucher, 9-8 (7-4), in another dazzling match.
- Montrieul wasted little time knotting the match at 2-2 after beating Vishavkarma, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.
- Eleventh-ranked Gomez recovered from a loss on Saturday to beat Becke, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2. That gave the Buccaneers a 3-2 lead.
- No. 35-ranked Nico Dreer and Bucs teammate Fabian Pronnet secured the win with victories at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.
- The Eagles took another point at No. 6 singles, but then it came down to a matter of history.
- Barry's No. 2-ranked Ahmed Triki dropped the first set to the South Region's No. 15th-ranked player in Couder, falling 7-6 (7-5). But the Bucs perennial All-American responded by winning the second set, 6-4, to tie it up. Triki, who had not lost since his freshman year, kept his streak alive by winning the third set tiebreaker, 12-10.
NOTEWORTHY:
- Barry's doubles losses were the first this season. The Bucs opened the year, winning its first seven pairs matches, including Versier and Tous' victory on Sunday.
- Triki has won 38 consecutive singles matches, dating back to March 22, 2014.
- Barry coach George Samuel moved within six wins of his 500th career victory with the Buccaneers men's team.
