Men's Basketball Speeds By Sharks

Mortensen pours in a season-high 26 points

DAVIE, Fla. -- The #9/11 ranked Barry Buccaneers raced past the Nova Southeastern Sharks 100-73 in the Rick Case Arena on Saturday in Sunshine State Conference men's basketball action.

SUMMARY:

  • 1st Half - The Sharks jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first minute, behind five points from Malik Hardy. But the Bucs responded with an 8-0 run of their own, capped by a layup by Theo Turner. Att he second media timeout, the Sharks led 24-12. But Barry closed the half on a 34-19 run. The first half saw five ties and 11 lead changes.
  • 2nd Half - The Bucs came out fast in the second half, scoring the first seven points to take a 53-43 lead on a layup by Sunday Dech with 18:08. Though the Sharks clawed back to within two points, 63-61 on a layup by David Dennis at 13:10, the Bucs quickly rebuilt a double figure lead as Daniel Mortensen hit a three-pointer at 9:06 for a 75-65 margin. The Sharks went ice cold over the next four minutes, hitting just 2-of-11 from the field as Barry sprinted out to a 92-69 edge. Milon Sheffield hit a three-pointer with :40 seconds left for the Bucs to hit the century mark.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Mortensen had a season-high 26 points, hitting 6-of-12 from three-point range. 
  • Elvar Fridriksson added 20 points and nine assists and Sunday Dech chipped in 17.
  • Dennis led the Sharks with 20 points and eight assists.
  • Barry held a 48-33 edge on the boards, with Mortensen and Dech each pulling down nine.
  • The Bucs out-scored the Sharks 54-30 in the second half.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs are back at home on Wednesday, Jan. 3 as they host the Saint Leo Lions in the Health & Sports Center at 7:30 pm.
