Women's Basketball Closes Semester In HoopMIA Tournament

Bucs face Skidmore on Monday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The women's basketball team looks to close the semester on a high note when they tangle with the Skidmore Thoroughbreds on Monday in the Health & Sports Center at 3:00 pm. The game is part of the HoopMIA Tournament, hosted at Barry by Eastern University.

The Bucs (9-2, 3-1 SSC) are on a roll, winning nine of their last 10 games, including eight in a row. Ranked fifth in the regional poll, their only two losses of the season have come at Union (ranked #1 in the region) and at Eckerd (ranked #2). The Bucs escaped a tiger trap, beating the Benedict Tigers 73-69 in overtime on Saturday. It is the second overtime win for the Bucs this season.

Kiara Palmer leads the Bucs in scoring (16.5), rebounding (10.9), blocked shots (33) and shooting (57.8%) again this season. She is coming off four straight double-doubles in wins over Rollins, Tampa, St. Thomas and Benedict. She narrowly missed a triple-double against the Tigers with 15 points, 16 rebounds and nine blocked shots. She is fifth in the conference in scoring, first in rebounding and second in blocks and third in shooting. Barbara Cousiño is chipping in 15.2 points (seventh in the SSC), 5.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. Ida Andersson has made quite the impression in her first season, averaging 10.9 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Harriet Swindells has been very effective from long range, shooting 40.6 percent from downtown. She averages 8.1 points per game  Cousiño and Swindells are the only teammates hitting better than 40 percent from beyond the arc. 

The Thoroughbreds are just 4-3 on the season, but have won four of their last five. This will be just their second road game of the season. They fell 54-50 at The Sage Colleges. 

Two-time All-American Kelly Donnelly leads the 'Breds with 19.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Senior guard Veronica Moceri is second on the team at 8.2 points per game and is the top three-point shooter. Senior guard Ali Fustini leads the team at 4.1 assist per game.

  • Sometimes overlooked, Stephane Granada has been the most efficient Buccaneer this season with a plus/minus of +9.73
  • The Thoroughbreds are the only NCAA Division III team on the schedule this year. The last time the Bucs faced a D-III opponent was Dec. 29, 2011 when they lost 64-60 to Wisconsin Lutheran.
