Men's Hoops Overcome Slow Start, Put Away Night Hawks

Barry hosts Cesar Odio Thanksgiving Classic Friday-Saturday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University men's basketball team overcame a sluggish first half with an overwhelming second half run to blow past Thomas (Ga.) Tuesday night in a tuneup for Friday's Cesar Odio Thanksgiving Classic. The Buccaneers beat the Night Hawks, 106-60, in front of 676 in the Health & Sports Center.

Barry led by three at the break, but outscored Thomas, 64-21, in the second half to win going away. Four players scored in double figures for Barry, which shot 63 percent from the field in the second half.

SUMMARY:

  • The Buccaneers shot 18 of 36 from the floor in the first half, but Thomas was 13 of 25 and 12 of 12 from the free throw line to keep it close. Barry opened an 11-point lead following a three-point play by Kooper Glick with 10:22 to play. But the Night Hawks chipped it down to six on two occasions in the next 1:14.  
  • Barry bumped the lead to 13 on a triple by Kyle Carey, but Thomas' Ivan Tomic hit a three of his own to cut it to five at the 5:07 mark. Johnnel Ginnie scored with 1:54 left in the half to pull the Night Hawks within two before Barry cushioned its lead to six on back-to-back buckets by Johannes Dolven. Thomas answered with a triple by Eric Johnson to make it a three-point game going into halftime.
  •  Thomas got within one twice early in the second half, but the Bucs opened a 10-point lead on a triple by Elvar Fridriksson 4:57 into the second half. That's about when the onslaught kicked in as the Bucs outscored the Night Hawks, 27-0, during a 6:06 span to put the game away.
  • The Night Hawks went 7 of 39 from the floor in the second half.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Marko Tomic scored a career-high 20 points, and pulled down seven rebounds for Barry.
  • Sunday Dech had 19 points, four steals and a block. Dolven added 16 points, eight boards, a block and a steal. Carey finished with 14 points and three steals.
  • Barry had 24 assists, marking the second time this season the Buccaneers have been over 20.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry will host No. 3/7 Bellarmine in the Cesar Odio Thanksgiving Classic 2 p.m. Friday. The tournament runs through Saturday.
