Volleyball Rallies to Stop Rollins in 5

Bucs host No. 4 PBA 4 p.m. Saturday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry coach Steve Hendricks just wanted his team to stay the course. It took that and a little more, but the Buccaneers found a way in the end.

Barry's volleyball team came from behind to beat Rollins, 14-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-9, Friday night in front of 317 fans in the Health and Sports Center. It was a critical win in the Sunshine State Conference standings as the Bccaneers moved into fourth place in the ultra-competitive league.

"We needed to stay calm and get back into our rhythm. And play steady volleyball," Hendricks said, relaying the message to his team between the second and third sets after Barry had dropped the first two. "And not get rattled because we got a little rattled."

But the Bucs answered the bell.

Jaeda Allen slammed down a kill from Maegan Cuesta to put the Buccaneers ahead 17-11. Johanna Voss put down a kill from Juliana Tirabassi to extend the lead to 21-16. Gabriela Jansen's kill made it 23-18. Two kills by Kishara Gordon sandwiched between a Rollins sideout ended the set to pull Barry within 2-1 in the match.
  • The Bucs had a .333 attack percentage in the fourth to even things up at two sets apiece. The Bucs broke a 7-7 tie with seven straight points, which included two kills by Genesis Castillo and an ace by Alexis Boutin. Kristina Filimonova's kill pushed Barry up, 17-10. Allen banged down a kill to make it 20-14. After the Tars cut it to three, Gordon put away another kill. An ace by Tirabassi, block by Filimonova and Voss and a Rollins service error sent the match into a fifth set.
  • Barry raced out to a 10-3 lead in the final set. Rollins cut it to 12-8 before Allen slammed down a kill. Gordon and Castillo combined on a block to make it 14-9 before a Tars attack error sealed the deal. The Bucs held the Tars to a .000 on four kills and four errors in the decisive set.
