Volleyball Drops Match to ERAU

Buccaneers host Florida Tech Saturday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's volleyball team got out to a good start, but could not sustain that level of play throughout the match Friday night, losing to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in four sets. The Buccaneers fell, 15-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-18.

Three Bucs finished with double figures in kills, but the Eagles matched that to win the Sunshine State Conference series this season. Barry dropped the first match to the Eagles earlier this year.

SUMMARY:

  • Barry ran out to a 9-1 lead in the opening set on a kill by Jaeda Allen. Embry-Riddle cut it to 10-8, but Kishara Gordon's kill pushed the Buccaneers back in front, 17-12. A kill by Johanna Voss triggered a 3-0 Bucs run before the Eagles won two of the next three serves. But the Bucs won the last four points, including an ace by Madison Yarborough to end the first set. 
  • The Buccaneers hit a whopping .500 in the opening set with 14 kills and one error.
  • Embry-Riddle turned the tables in the second set. Barry hit .096, while ERAU hit .160. Alexis Boutin's ace had the Bucs up, 14-12, but the Eagles went on a 5-0 run to take the lead. Barry pulled within 19-18 on a kill by Allen before Embry-Riddle pushed its lead back to six to tie the match at a set apiece entering the break.
  • Allen ripped off an ace to give Barry an 11-10 lead in the third set, but the Eagles used a 4-0 run to take control. The Bucs cut it to 15-14 on an ace by Yarborough before Embry-Riddle won the next three points. Barry closed the gap to 18-17 on an ace by Genesis Castillo and Eagles attack error. Twice more the Bucs got within one on kills by Kristina Filimonova and Allen, but ERAU won the last five points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • In the final set, the Buccaneers forced seven ties, but couldn't get over the hump after the Eagles went ahead, 8-7. Barry had 12 kills and five errors in the final set. Embry-Riddle had 17 kills and four errors 

NOTEWORTHY:
  • Allen had 12 kills and matched her career-high with four aces. She had three aces in the first set.
  • Filimonova had 10 kills, reaching double figures for the ninth time this season.
  • Voss had a season-high 10 kills.
  • Juliana Tirabassi had 36 assists and 12 digs.
  • Yarborough had a career-high three aces.
  • Barry matched a season-best with nine aces.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry will host Florida Tech at 4 p.m. Saturday.
