Bucs to complete GSC challenge vs. North Alabama Saturday

HOOVER, Ala.  -- Buccaneers coach Steve Hendricks had his team toast each other until their water glasses were empty. Friday, Barry University's volleyball team was the toast of the South Region Crossover after winning both of its matches.

Barry picked up its second win of the day by beating Shorter, 25-23. 28-26, 22-25, 28-26, at the Finley Center.

Kishara Gordon and Kristina Filimonova both had double-digit kills and hit over .470 as the Buccaneers scrapped from behind late in a couple sets to pick up a big victory in the first meeting between the two schools.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Barry 3, Shorter 1
Records: Barry (8-4), Shorter (10-8)
All-Time Series: Barry leads, 1-0

SUMMARY:

  • Madison Yarborough came on late in the first set to serve Barry from two points down into a 22-22 tie. After Shorter won the next point, the Bucs won the last three points on a Hawks error, an Alexis Boutin ace and kill by Filimonova.
  • The Bucs banged down 16 kills and had five errors for a .297 hitting percentage in the second set. Barry trailed 23-18 before capitalizing on two Shorter errors and a pair of kills by Filimonova. Jaeda Allen had one of her 11 kills, and the Hawks committed another error to square it at 24-24. Tied at 26 four serves later, the Bucs closed out the set on a kill by Gordon and Hawks error.
  • The Hawks played from ahead most of the third set before Yarborough came in to serve the Buccaneers into a 19-19 tie. Shorter crept ahead by winning the next four points, but following a kill by Filimonova that pulled the Bucs within, 23-22, the Hawks closed out the set to cut the match to 2-1.
  • Gordon tapped down one of Juliana Tirabassi's 26 assists to tie the fourth set at 14-14. Alexis Boutin had back-to-back service points which included a block by Brittany Reynolds and Filimonova to push Barry ahead 19-17. Shorter didn't fade again, however, tying the match seven more times -- the last to bring the score to 26-26 -- before Filimonova put the match in the books with a pair of kills on setups from Nathaly Alvarez and Boutin.
  • Alvarez finished with 14 assists and two aces. Boutin had 20 digs. Tirabassi had 17 digs.

NOTEWORTHY:
  • Gordon's 17 kills was a career high. She also hit .500 for the second time Friday.
  • Filimonova's 19 kills marked the fifth straight match she topped 10. She also had a career-best nine blocks and nine digs.
  • Barry improved to 4-1 in four-set matches.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

"It was good to finish the day on another win against a quality opponent. My team continues to get better with each match, playing more steady, and finding a way to win. We had great performances from our middle blockers today. Kishara and Kristina had a phenomenal day."
        -- Barry coach Steve Hendricks
