Women's Basketball Flips Switch on FIT

Buccaneers snap 9-game skid; host No. 25 Eckerd Saturday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University's women's basketball team snapped a nine-game losing skid in its 67-61 win over Florida Tech Wednesday night.

The Buccaneers led by as many as 13, and held off a late comeback bid by the Panthers to pick up their first win since Dec. 13. Now they'll get another crack against the Sunshine State Conference's leader and No. 25-ranked Eckerd Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Health & Sports Center.

  • 1Q - Julia Paulin hit a twirling shot at the end of the quarter to put the Bucs ahead by six at the end of the period. The Bucs did not turn the ball over in the period. | Barry 17, Florida Tech 11
  • 2Q - The Panthers cut it to two with 3:13 to go, but Kiara Palmer scored with 41 seconds left to send Barry into the intermission up eight. | Barry 33, Florida Tech 25
  • 3Q - The Bucs opened the second half with a pair of free throws by Melanie Jordan as the result of a technical foul at the end of the first half. Barry extended the lead to 13 on Lexy Schoonover's triple 20 seconds into the quarter. FIT cut the gap to nine entering the final 10 minutes. |Barry 46, Florida Tech 37
  • 4Q - Barry built the lead back to 12 on a 3-pointer by Lauren Seyranian early in the quarter. The Panthers trimmed the deficit to seven with 7:00 to go. Palmer sank a pair of free throws with 4:16 left to push the Bucs back up 13. But FIT went on a 10-0 run to cut it to three with 0:45 seconds left. The Bucs extended the lead to two possessions twice more, sandwiched in between a Panther basket with 0:11 seconds remaining. NOTEWORTHY:

  • Palmer scored 20 points for the third time this season. She had eight field goals for the fourth time this season. She also had her fourth double-double of the season.
  • Jordan scored in double figures for the second straight game. 
  • Barry was out-rebounded, 50-36. 
  • The lead changed hands only once in the game as the Bucs controlled the tempo nearly the entire way.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry will host 25th-ranked Eckerd 2 p.m. Saturday.
