Volleyball Falls at No. 21 Florida Southern

Bucs win opening set before dropping final three

LAKELAND, Fla. – Despite winning the opening set in impressive fashion, Barry's volleyball team lost at No. 21 Florida Southern, 22-25, 25-12, 25-20, 25-15, Friday night.

The Buccaneers (8-4, 2-2 Sunshine State Conference) will play at Eckerd 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Bucs were in command during the first set. They took a 9-4 lead on a kill by Genesis Castillo. A kill by Jaeda Allen made it 15-11. Kristina Filimonova and Castillo's block extended it to 19-14. The Mocs rallied to tie it at 20-20, but the Buccaneers ran off the next four points out of a timeout, including two kills by Jenny Trinidad and two more by Allen. The Moccasins (10-3, 4-1) pulled within two, but Allen's kill handed the Bucs the first set.

Barry hit .324 in the opening set, committing just two attack errors. Allen had five kills in the first set.

The Bucs fell behind 14-9 in the second set. The Mocs went on a 6-1 run to extend their lead to 20-10. Barry was victimized by a couple of overpass kills that allowed Florida Southern to put away some easy balls. The Mocs tied the match at 1-1 on a Barry attack error to end the second set.

FSC hit .448 in the second set, reversing the script from the opening set when the Mocs hit .146 with eight attack errors.

Florida Southern's Ana Tovo had 13 of her 18 kills through two sets.

Allen's ace pulled the Bucs within 8-4 in the third set. A block by Castillo and Filimonova made it 9-6. Allen's back row kill pulled the Bucs within 10-9. Filimonova's two straight kills put the Bucs up 11-10. Allen's ninth kill tied the score at 13-13.

Trinidad's ace gave the Bucs a 15-14 lead in set 3. Castillo's kill put the Bucs up 17-15. Castillo and Ivana Didanovic's block tied the score at 18-18. But the Bucs passing hurt them again as the Mocs took advantage of overpass kills, and a block by Allie Geary and Tovo gave Florida Southern a four-point lead. The Mocs closed out the set to take a 2-1 lead.

Barry had nine kills and eight errors in the third set. The Mocs had 12 kills and five errors.

In the fourth set, Trinidad floated over an ace, and Allen tapped down a kill to pull the Buccaneers within 5-4. The Mocs crept ahead 12-8 before a Mocs service error stopped the run. Nicole Mattson's kill, a block by Geary and Mattson, an ace by Tovo, a Bucs attack error and another kill by Mattson ran the Moccasins lead to 18-10 before Allen put down a kill.

The Mocs increased their lead to 22-12 before Allen came up with another kill on a setup from Kat Espinosa. Barry gave away a point on a rotation error and another on an overpass kill by Jessica Sullivan, and another kill by Sullivan following a kill by Kaitlin Drake gave the Mocs the win.

Allen had 12 kills and 19 digs. Filimonova had eight kills and five blocks. Trinidad had 30 assists and four aces. Didanovic had six kills and four blocks. Espinosa had 22 digs and Ariel Mangum 13.
