ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Barry's volleyball team tested Eckerd for nearly two-and-a-half hours before succumbing, 24-26, 25-20, 25-15, 23-25, 15-13, Saturday.
The Buccaneers (8-5, 2-3 Sunshine State Conference) hit .213. The Tritons (11-4, 5-1) hit .240.
Barry trailed 16-11 in the first set, but stormed back to get within one, 19-18, on a kill by
Jaeda Allen. The Bucs stayed within one on
Ivana Didanovic's kill, but a service error and attack error allowed the Tritons to go up 23-20 before
Eva Raat banged down a kill for the Bucs. An Eckerd attack error and kill by
Genesis Castillo tied the score at 23-23. After back-to-back sideouts, a Tritons ball handling error and kill by
Kristina Filimonova gave the Bucs the opening set.
Barry setter
Jenny Trinidad had 18 assists in the first set. Didanovic, Filimonova, Allen and Castillo each had four kills. The Bucs hit .333.
The Buccaneers trailed 9-5 in the second set before Trinidad recorded a kill on a set from
Ariel Mangum. Katie Arnette's kill pushed the Tritons lead back to four. Raat and Allen each had a kill to pull the Bucs back within 18-17. But Eckerd raced back out to a four-point lead, 22-18, before Allen put away a kill. The Bucs gave away a point on a service error, and after a kill by Allen, the Tritons picked up the last two points to tie the match at a set apiece.
Eckerd ran out to a 15-9 lead in the third set. Following a Barry setting error, Castillo pounded two straight kills to pull the Bucs within 16-11. Eckerd's Kali Boatwright had two straight kills to extend the Tritons lead to 19-12. The Bucs never recovered, dropping the set.
Juliana Tirabassi fired up the Bucs first ace to spot Barry an 8-3 lead in the fourth set before the Tritons rallied to pull within 9-7. Filimonova's ace, and a kill by Didanovic pushed the Buccaneers back in front, 12-7. Eckerd cut it to 14-12 on a kill by Lauryn Nelson, prompting a Bucs timeout. Castillo responded with a kill out of the timeout on Trinidad's 42
nd assist. But the Tritons tied it up at 15-15 on a kill by Boatwright.
Kaitlin Drake put down two straight balls to put Barry ahead 19-17. The Tritons pulled even on a Bucs serving and attack error. But three straight Tritons errors and a block by Drake and Didanovic gave the Bucs a 23-19 advantage. Eckerd cut it to 23-22 on Arielle Erillo's ace, and then tied it on a block by Sarah Johnshoy and Nelson. Drake pounded a kill, and Allen came up with a block to give the Bucs the fourth set, tying the match at 2-2.
Filimonova's block gave the Bucs a 6-3 lead in the final set. Nelson's kill tied it at 7-7 before Raat put down a ball on a set from Tirabassi. Didanovic's kill gave Barry a 10-9 lead. McKenzie Redner's kill pulled the Tritons even again, 11-11. Nelson's kill gave Eckerd a 13-12 lead. A Bucs attack error set up double match point for the Tritons before Filimonova's kill made it 14-13. But Redner finished it off with a kill as Eckerd survived.
Allen finished with 17 kills and 12 digs. Castillo had 15 kills and hit .414. Filimonova had 10 kills and three blocks. Trinidad finished with 47 assists and nine digs. Espinosa had 25 digs. Didanovic had nine kills and three blocks. Drake had six kills.
Trinidad went over 2,000 career assists.
The Bucs had 10 service errors and two aces. Eckerd had nine service errors and seven aces. Barry was outblocked 9-7.
Barry will play at Saint Leo and Tampa Friday and Saturday.
