MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The defending Sunshine State Conference champion Buccaneer women's soccer team travels to face the conference-leading Saint Leo Lions on Saturday, Sept. 24.
The Buccaneers (3-1-1, 1-1-0 SSC) are currently one of six teams tied for third place in the conference with three points after knocking off arch-rival Lynn 2-0 on Wednesday.
The Bucs have won two in a row, having beaten then #20-ranked Embry-Riddle 2-1 on Saturday.
The trio of Molly Sharpe, Carissa Sanchez and Sarah Wignall have keyed the offense for the Bucs. Sanchez and Wignall lead the team with two goals each and five points, while Sharpe has two assists to pace the squad. All three have produced one game-winner.
Keeper Paula Forero continues to be one of the best in the league. She is second with a 0.77 goals against average and shutouts (3) and third in save percentage (.833).
The Lions (5-1-0, 3-0-0 SSC) are riding a five-match winning streak, led by star forward Arielle Kabangu and midfielder Natalie Mello. Kabangu is tied for first in the league with eight goals while Mello shares the conference lead with five assists.
Keeper Julia Ortiz is seventh in the conference with a 1.26 goals against average and a .762 save percentage. The Lions have not posted a clean sheet in six outings.
The Bucs lead the overall series 13-5-1 and have won five of the last six, but the affairs have been very tight. Since 2008, all but two of the 10 matches have been settled by one goal or less, with three matches going to overtime, including last year's 2-1 win by the Bucs in Miami Shores.
