Volleyball Splits at Route 92 Showdown

Bucs beat Cal State East Bay, fall in four sets to Dominican

HAYWARD, Calif. -- Barry University's volleyball team went 1-1 to begin the season at the Route 92 Showdown at Cal State East Bay. The Buccaneers beat the host Pioneers, 25-22, 25-27, 25-19, 25-19, in the first match before falling to Dominican (Calif.), 25-19, 25-27, 25-16, 29-27, in the second match Friday.

Barry (1-1) will play Academy of Art and host Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, Calif., Saturday.

In the opener, the Bucs came back from a 20-18 deficit in the first set to tie it at 22 on Jenny Trinidad's ace. A kill by Ivana Didanovic and two hitting errors by East Bay gave the Buccaneers the first set. Barry trailed 16-12 in the second set before Ariel Mangum had a kill and three straight service points to tie it. Kaitlin Drake's kill gave the Buccaneers a 21-20 lead, but the Pioneers traded serves with the Bucs until taking a 24-23 lead. Jaeda Allen tied the set twice with two kills, but Cal State East Bay took the final two points of the set to tie the match at 1-1.

The Bucs got out to a 10-6 lead in the third set before the Pioneers responded with seven of the next 10 points to go ahead 13-12. Kills by Allen and Eva Raat put the Buccaneers up, 15-13. But East Bay rallied again to take a 17-16 before the Bucs ran off the next six points, capped off by Kishara Gordon's kill to take 22-17 lead. After the Pioneers sandwiched two kills around an error to draw within four, Didanovic and Genesis Castillo put back-to-back balls away to send Barry into the fourth set up, 2-1.

Barry took a 16-13 lead in the fourth set on Juliana Tirabassi's ace. Brittany Reynolds banged down a kill for an 18-14 lead. East Bay drew within 19-17, but Didanovic and Reynolds combined on a block to push Barry up 21-17. Paola Buitrago served the Bucs ahead 23-18 when Allen put away a setup from Jenny Trinidad. After the Pioneers won the next point, Barry closed out the match on an East Bay error and kill by Allen.

Allen finished with 15 kills, nine digs and four blocks in her Bucs debut. Kristina Filiminova had 12 kills, hit .524 and had three blocks. Castillo had seven kills and Didanovic six kills and five blocks. Trinidad finished with 24 assists, 11 digs and two aces. Ariel Mangum had 19 digs and an ace, and Kat Espinosa had 16 digs.

Barry outblocked East Bay, 12.5 to 5. The Bucs hit .161, while the Pioneers had a .055 attack percentage.

In the second match,  the Buccaneers fell behind 10-3 in the first set to the Penguins. Barry closed to within 15-10 on a kill by Didanovic. Didanovic put away two straight kills to cut it to 16-12, but Dominican pushed the lead back to 20-14. A kill by Filiminova and a Penguins error pulled the Bucs within four, but Dominican won three of the final four points to take the opening set.

Barry trailed 18-14 in the second set before Allen's kill forced a sideout. Allen served the next three points, capped off by an ace to tie it at 18-18. Filiminova's kill and a Penguins error gave the Bucs a 20-18 lead. Dominican responded to take a 23-22 lead on a Buccaneers hitting error before Reynolds banged down a kill to tie it back up. Castillo's kill, a combo block by Gordon and Filiminova and an ace by Castillo tied the match at a set apiece.

Barry won the second set despite offsetting 13 kills with 13 attack errors. Dominican had nine kills and eight errors in the set.

Dominican got out to a 14-9 lead in the third, and bumped it to 18-12. The Penguins won four of the next six points to take a 22-14 lead before Didanovic's kill stopped the run. But the Bucs could not draw any closer as the Penguins pulled ahead in the pivotal third set.

Barry overcame a four-point deficit in the final set to pull even on a block by Allen and Filiminova. Drake found a groove late in the match, blasting down a ball to push the Bucs ahead 20-19. Trinidad ripped off an ace to push the Bucs up 23-21. A kill by Drake moved Barry within a point of sending the match to a fifth set, but the Penguins responded with a kill and an ace to tie it at 24-24. Castillo's kill gave the Bucs a 25-24 lead, but Dominican were the beneficiaries of two straight Bucs hitting errors to jump ahead, 26-25. Castillo and Allen had back-to-back kills to move Barry in front, 27-26, but the Penguins rallied for the final three points to seal it.

The Buccaneers hit .084, and the Penguins .223. Barry outblocked Dominican, 10.5 to 6. The Penguins converted 13 of 16 sideouts in the third set to take the momentum. The Bucs were 56 of 103 in sideout chances for the match.

Allen had 14 kills, 11 digs, three blocks and two aces. Castillo had nine kills and four blocks. Didanovic had eight kills. Drake had seven kills and hit .300. Reynolds added five kills. Tirabassi had 21 assists and two aces. Trinidad had 18 assists and two of the Bucs' seven aces. Espinosa had 24 digs.
