MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- In the longest match of the season, Barry University's volleyball team outlasted rival Nova Southeastern, 25-17, 22-25, 21-25, 25-13, 15-13, in the Sunshine State Conference opener for the Buccaneers.
It was the first five-set match of the season for the Bucs (7-2, 1-0 SSC). The Sharks (6-4, 1-1) were playing in their second five-setter of the weekend.
Barry banged a season-high 70 kills, hitting .380 along the way. NSU had 55 kills, and hit .214.
Trailing 2-1, Barry stormed back in the fourth set, racing out to a 7-2 lead on a kill by
Jaeda Allen.
Kaitlin Drake's blast extended the Bucs lead to 10-4.
Jenny Trinidad dumped a kill on a dig from
Ariel Mangum to push the Bucs ahead 18-9. A kill by Drake made it 20-11, and a block by Drake and
Kristina Filimonova tied the match at 2-2.
The Bucs hit a whopping .593 in the fourth set, putting away 17 kills with one error.
Barry got out to a 10-6 lead in the fifth set, but former Buccaneer Tashalyn Begon's kill pulled the Sharks within two, and Jessica Ronyak's kill and a Bucs error tied the score at 11-11. Drake ended the Sharks run with a kill before NSU forced a sideout with a kill by Ronyak to tie it up again at 12-12. Drake and Filimonova put away back-to-back balls to give Barry a 14-12 lead. Denvyr Tyler-Palmer's kill pulled the Sharks within 14-13, but Allen pounded the last ball down to wrap up the match.
Barry hit .348 in the decisive set, putting away 10 kills against two errors. Nova had a .231 attack rate with nine kills and three errors in the set.
Allen pounded a season-high 20 kills, hit .421 and had 16 digs and two blocks. Drake had 15 kills, hit .353 and had nine digs. Trinidad had a career-best 55 assists, nine kills and one ace. Filimonova had 10 kills, five blocks and hit .500.
Genesis Castillo had seven kills, and hit .412.
Ariel Mangum had 18 digs and five assists.
Kat Espinosa had 10 digs.Â
The Bucs outblocked Nova, 7-3.
Barry plays at Lynn 7 p.m. Tuesday.
