MIAMI SHORES, Fla.--The Barry University Buccaneers knocked off the #20-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles on Saturday night in women's soccer action from Buccaneer Field.
The Bucs (2-1-1) grabbed a lead in the 21st minute. Sarah Wignall lofted a shot from the right wing that Eagle keeper Fanny Kristiansson saved, but could not control. Linnea Kogsta was there to clean up the rebound and break the scoring ice. It was Kogsta's first career goal with the Bucs and the first goal allowed by the Eagles this year.
In the 29th minute, Molly Sharpe sent a cross in, again from the right wing, and Carissa Sanchez collected it inside the penalty box and rifled a shot through the hands of Kristiansson.
Leading 2-0 at the break, the Bucs found themselves under heavy pressure in the first few minutes of the second period. It paid off for the Eagles (4-1-0) when Maria Schmiedhofer lofted a cross from the right side that Barry keeper Paula Forero push up into the crossbar, but Elvira Ramle was there for the rebound to trim the lead to one in the 49th minute.
The Bucs tightened up after that and neither could score the rest of the way, although the Eagles had eight of their 11 corners in the second period.
The shots were 15-14 for the Eagles, with each team putting six on the frame. Forero and Kristiansson each had four saves, while Shanell McDonnell swept another ball off the line, her second of the season.
The Bucs host arch-rival Lynn on Wednesday, Sept 21 as the Knights invade Buccaneer Field for their annual tussle.
