Volleyball Falls to No. 17 PBA

Bucs host Nova Southeastern 4 p.m. Saturday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry's volleyball team lost to No. 17 Palm Beach Atlantic, 25-21, 25-22, 25-23, Friday. The loss snapped a five-match win streak for the Buccaneers.

Barry (6-2) will host Nova Southeastern (6-3, 1-0 Sunshine State Conference) 4 p.m. Saturday in the first league match of the season.

The Bucs hit a season-high .300, putting away 42 kills against 12 errors. The Sailfish (5-3) hit .321 with 46 kills and 12 errors.

Barry's Jaeda Allen had a season-high 17 kills, and hit .306. Ivana Didanovic had eight kills, and hit .444 with no errors. PBA's Ally Rohn had 17 kills, and Sarah Ragland added 10.

The Bucs fell behind 11-6 in the first set, but used a kill by Didanovic to trigger a five-point spurt to tie things up. The Sailfish bumped their lead back to three before Allen put down one of Jenny Trinidad's 28 assists to cut it to 16-15. But PBA used a kill by Emma Ballantyne to pad the lead to 20-17. An attack error by Rohn pulled the Bucs within one, but the Sailfish used another 4-0 run to extend the lead to 24-19 before putting the set away.

PBA hit .345 in the first set. Barry hit .286.

The Bucs played the Sailfish pretty much point for point midway through the second set, taking a 14-13 lead on a kill by Allen. But a kill by Ragland and a Bucs setting error gave the Sailfish an 18-15 lead. A kill by Kaitlin Drake and Kristina Filimonova's ace pulled the Buccaneers within 18-17, but the Sailfish cushioned the lead to 20-18 on a kill by Rohn. Drake had a kill, and Filimonova and Allen combined on a block to keep the Bucs within one, 23-22, but PBA snatched the final two points to take a 2-0 lead into intermission.

The Bucs trailed by as many as four in the final set, but a block by Filimonova and Trinidad pulled Barry within 16-15. Didanovic put away a ball to keep the Bucs within one, and after a kill by Rohn, Barry's Serbian middle blocker sent another kill to the floor to tie it up, 20-20. But like it was the entire match, the Bucs could not get over the hump, climbing to within 24-23 on Allen's kill before Rohn finished it off.

Barry hit .375 with one attack error in the final set. PBA hit .325 with five errors.

Drake finished with six kills, 12 digs and an ace. Trinidad had five kills, no errors and two block assists. Didanovic added three blocks.
