MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry University Buccaneers are off to a good start in the 2016 women's soccer season as they get set to open defense of their Sunshine State Conference title on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
After opening the season with a 2-0 victory over Lenoir-Ryhne, and a 0-0 tie in double overtime against Flagler, the Bucs will hit the road for the first time this season, against the Panthers (4-0-0). After starting the season ranked sixth, the Bucs fell out of the poll this week, after the draw with Flagler. Meanwhile, the Panthers, who started unranked, climbed into the poll at #14.
The Bucs went 2-0 versus the Panthers last season, pitching a shutout during their first meeting, which saw goals scored by Amanda Traynor and Shanice Robe. Their second meeting came in the SSC tournament, in which the Bucs would also take the contest with a final score of 2-1 as Rayah Seckler and Hanna Durocher scored the goals.
The series is tied 6-6-5 after the Bucs' two wins in 2015. The goal by Traynor in game one last year snapped a 661-minute scoreless streak in the series for the Buccaneers, dating back to Kayla Hodge's fifth minute goal in 2012.
Barry will look to ride last year's success into Florida tech this Wednesday. The game will broadcast on the Panthers Sports Network.
